Join Hurtigruten “In Search of the Northern Lights” Along the Norwegian Coast With Fares Starting as Low as $899

Hurtigruten

Tromsø, July, 2014 – Hurtigruten announces the addition of a brand new, six-day sailing and land voyage—“In Search of the Northern Lights”—focusing on one of Norway's most spectacular natural attractions, the display of Northern Lights. The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is a natural phenomenon that fills the night sky with yellow, green or red belts of color, arising with little advance notice. Because of the timing and location of this voyage, guests have an exceptional possibility of seeing the Northern Lights as the ship sails above the Arctic Circle. Guests on the Northern Lights voyage will also spend one night in Bergen or Tromsø, soaking in the culture of these Northern cities, as well have the option of experiencing exciting land excursions such as dog sledding and snowmobile safaris. Forty different sailing dates between November 25 and December 18, 2014 and between January 24 and March 20, 2015 start as low as $899 per person, double, plus airfare.

The Northern Lights voyages run between the UNESCO-listed harbor city of Bergen and the Arctic Circle's second largest city, Tromsø and is available in both directions. On the Northbound sailing, guests will spend a night in historic Bergen where they can explore the Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf or take the Funicular to the top of Mount Floyen for stunning city views before embarking on the voyage to Tromsø. During the voyage, guests will have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Art Nouveau city of Ålesund, the royal city of Trondheim and the Lofoten Islands. Optional land excursions include a visit to Atlanterhavsparken, one of Northern Europe's largest salt-water aquariums, a Viking feast complete with homemade mead and the chance to go reindeer sledging, the traditional Sámi way of transport through the Arctic landscape.

Guests travelling southbound will spend the night in Tromsø before heading out to see the stunning network of inlets and isles near Vesterålen and the Lofoten Islands, cross the Arctic Circle and view the Seven Sisters mountains, and see Trondheim, Kristiansund and Bergen. Optional land excursions include a midnight concert at the exquisite Arctic Cathedral, dog sledging across the Arctic landscape and a city walk through historic and picturesque city of Trondheim.

The term “Hunting the Light” was coined by one of Hurtigruten's captains as he described what happens when guests gathered on deck, eager to see this natural light show for themselves. Guests can learn more about the science behind the Aurora Borealis through onboard lectures and get photographic tips about how best to capture the light show. They can even sign up to be awoken during the night should the crew spot the lights.

Hurtigruten sails to the most remote of destinations – including Antarctica, Greenland and the Arctic's Spitsbergen – as well as year round along Norway's coast and Europe in the spring and fall. The company's fleet of intimate ships, which each carry 100 to 646 guests, allows travelers to enjoy the scenery and culture of the destination in a relaxed atmosphere. Additional information, brochures and reservations can be obtained from travel agents or Hurtigruten's visitor-friendly website, www.hurtigruten.us; by phone at 877-301-3117; or fax at 888-524-2145.
