Jet Airways Celebrates 20 Years

Jet Airways

Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, is this month celebrating two decades of service excellence in the skies, since it began operations on 5 May 1993.

Jet Airways’ founding mission – to widen connectivity within India and overseas, facilitate the movement of people, encouraging both tourism and trade while contributing to the development of the Indian economy – has stood the airline in good stead in its continued trajectory to success.

Since taking delivery of its first aircraft at Mumbai in the presence of J R D Tata, the father of Indian Civil Aviation, Jet Airways has emerged as one of the few Indian service brands to successfully create a name for itself globally. The airline, which today has a combined fleet of 115 aircraft, offers customers a schedule of over 600 flights daily, spanning 20 international destinations across the globe and over 52 destinations pan-India.

Benchmarking itself with the best, not just within India but internationally, Jet Airways has constantly challenged the concept of guest satisfaction. The airline is dedicated to ensuring that the flying experience of its guests, is the best – a truly world-class in-flight product coupled with warm service.

Jet Airways milestones:

  • Jet Airways was founded by Mr Naresh Goyal in 1992, launching as an Air Taxi Operator on 5 May 1993, initially operating to 12 destinations, with four Boeing 737-300 aircraft leased from Ansett Worldwide Aviation.
  • The airline was the first to fly the Modern Generation, fuel-efficient Boeing 737-300 aircraft in Indian skies.
  • In December 1996, Jet Airways signed a Purchase Agreement with the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, USA, for the acquisition of 10 B737-400/800 aircraft, thus becoming the country’s first private airline to acquire its own fleet of new aircraft.
  • Following Jet Airways’ domestic success story and growing liberalisation, the airline embarked on a phase of expansion in March 2004 with a flight between Chennai and Colombo.
  • Jet Airways went on to open new international routes initially within the SAARC region and then onto Singapore, Bangkok, and, in May 2005, London, becoming the first private Indian airline to fly internationally.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary and its commitment to service excellence over two decades, Jet Airways has a planned programme of festivities, on ground and in the skies, to thank all its guests for their continued support.
