The crew of 'JAMAICA Get All Right' and 'JAMAICA Lighting Bolt' Clipper yachts met for the first time in Londonderry on Friday 27 June, to welcome the return of the race to the UK during the Clipper Round the World yacht race's stopover in the city.
The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) attended the affair, which brought together the crews from the current 2013/2014 team and the 2009/2010 'JAMAICA Lightning Bolt'. The event celebrated the huge achievements of both Jamaican Clipper teams while acknowledging the current crews' hard work as the race draws to a close.
Whilst in Londonderry, JTB's Elizabeth Fox, Regional Director for UK and N.Europe and Torrance Lewis, District Sales Manager, were heartened by the warm welcome and keen interest shown by the people of Northern Ireland. 'JAMAICA' Get All Right crew members were invited by three local radio stations for live interviews, discussing Jamaica and its joint heritage with Northern Ireland. The interviews also provided the JTB with opportunities to publicise the organisation's 'Bolt' pose competition that encouraged the people of Londonderry to strike the iconic 'Bolt' pose against well-known Londonderry backdrops or dress in the Jamaican flag colors in order to win a Jamaica goody bag.
'JAMAICA Get All Right', is one of 12 crews currently participating in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The race is currently en-route to Den Helder, Netherlands, before all crews make the final voyage to St Katharine Docks for the race finish in London on 12-13 July.
During the world's longest ocean race, the crews have visited some of the finest destinations in the world, and based on feedback from crew members, Port Antonio in Jamaica ranked as one of their most memorable stopovers.
Elizabeth Fox, said: 'It was thrilling to be able to welcome our 'JAMAICA Get All Right' crew and meet up with the 'JAMAICA Lightning Bolt' crew from the 2009/2010 race. We were very happy that our skipper, Pete Stirling celebrated his birthday during the Londonderry stopover. Jamaica is grateful for his efforts and determination so it was fitting to be able to bring the crews together and help him celebrate his special day in true Jamaican style.”
