It's All in the Mix: 10 California Events Offering Colorful, Cultural Mash-Ups

California loves its hybrids, whether it's vehicles, fusion cuisine or special events that celebrate the Golden State's astounding diversity and wealth of resources. We scanned the state to bring you a list of ten “cultural mash-up” events. These events enable you to take part in a variety of activities in one place at one time – like sipping great California wine, tasting locally sourced food and catching the work of area artists, for one example. 20th Street Block Party – San Francisco (Annual: August) 
To experience San Francisco like a local, head to this community block party held in the city's Mission District. Put on for over 20 years by the Noise Pop music and arts organization, the one-day event puts the focus on San Francisco artists, musicians and cultural taste-makers as well as showcasing neighborhood food purveyors and vendors.http://20thstreetblockparty.com

December Nights – San Diego (Annual: December) 
San Diego's largest free community festival is a great event for families and anyone who wants to experience the holidays Southern California style. Held in Balboa Park during the first weekend in December, the festive weekend includes free admission to open museums, a chance to sample a world's-worth of holiday recipes and performances by local talent like the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet. Last year a zip-line was added so festival-goers can now fly through the winter sky like Rudolph. http://www.balboapark.org/decembernights/ 

Downtown Artwalk – Los Angeles (Monthly) 
Every second Thursday of the month, Downtown LA's Gallery Row district and surrounding streets buzz with activity during this free, self-guided art walk that essentially becomes an urban block party. The art shown in the 40-plus galleries here is the main draw, but music, food, craft cocktails and some of the best people watching in the city are what keep locals and visitors coming back. www.downtownartwalk.org 

Dwell on Design – Los Angeles (Annual: May) 
Curated by the editors of Dwell magazine, Dwell on Design LA is the largest design event in the US. But it's not just about sleek new furniture and architecture solutions of the future – though there is plenty of that. The show turns 300,000 square feet of the LA Convention Center into a dizzying showcase that is basically a glimpse into the future including smart home technologies, revolutionary takes on urban renewal and even the chance to drive the latest clean green vehicles.

Oakland First Fridays & Art Murmur – Oakland (Monthly) 
What has quickly become a hugely popular East Bay mash-up of gallery and street art, music, food and performers is itself a combination of two events. For nine years on the first Friday of the month, Art Murmur has given the public a chance to check out Oakland's vibrant gallery scene and explore downtown Oakland. It proved so popular, the partner event First Fridays was created, and now includes an Uptown street festival along Telegraph Avenue that brims with performers, food vendors and interactive experiences.

Outside Lands – San Francisco (Annual: August) 
What happens when you take a hugely popular music festival featuring A-list acts like Kanye West and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and mix it up with a kaleidoscope of cool San Francisco culture? You get the Outside Lands festival. Held annually in the city's iconic Golden Gate Park, the fest is named after the original name for the park but trust us, this event is all about what's trending in the Bay Area. That means in addition to three days of live performances you can explore tastings, activities and events celebrating local food, wine, beer, cocktails, art and technology.

TBD Fest – Sacramento (Annual: October) 
Music, food, design and ideas are the centerpiece of Sacramento's three-day TBD Fest. Held in October in West Sacramento, music acts like Blondie and Moby perform on the concert stage while local chefs battle it out on the culinary stage and yogis get their downward dogs on. The festival also celebrates tastemakers and innovators in the lifestyle and technology spaces with interactive exhibitions.

Tahoe Snow Festival – North Lake Tahoe (Annual: February/March) 
Winter is a time to celebrate in Lake Tahoe, especially in late February and early March during the region's annual SnowFest. Think of a European winter carnival with a distinct Californian spin and you have the idea. Activities and events include ski races, parades, fireworks displays, a Mardi Gras party, ice carving, a festival queen competition and even a bar games Olympics.

Temecula Wine & Balloon Festival (Annual: May) 
Leave it to California to come up with this fantastical pairing of soaring hot air balloons and wine tasting. Every May, this event brings a festive, carnival-like atmosphere to Temecula with a delightfully diverse line-up of activities and events including wine and beer pairings, a food pavilion of global flavors, a Kids Faire, live entertainment, and the chance to hitch a ride in a hot air balloon or just take in the spectacular scenery as the majestic balloons take flight at sunrise and sunset. http://www.tvbwf.com/

Yountville Live – Yountville (Annual: March) 
Food, wine and music are an irresistible combination, especially when served up in the Michelin star-studded hamlet of Yountville.
