This weekend Perisher Blue hosts the craziest, most fun and action packed series of events in the Australian snowfields, the Coca-Cola Wild Winter Weekend. In its 15th year, competitors will be dashing, jumping and splashing their way down the slopes in the pursuit of alpine glory and a slice of over $20,000 cash.
It started this year on Thursday morning with a brand new event held in the Perisher Blue Half Pipe. Sixteen invited competitors put on a spectacular display as both skiers and boarders performed for the cameras in the brand new 'Coke in the pipe' event. This inaugural event truly demonstrated who is more capable of the most exciting freestyle manoeuvres in the half pipe - skiers or boarders. The winner was boarder Shay Paxton who pulled the big moves and wowed the crowd.
Day 2 saw boarders get another chance at the cash in the 'Coca-Cola Shred for Bread'. The Shred' is a boardercross style event held on the immaculately prepared course, along side the Village 8 Express. In the Shred', 80 entrants competed over a series of heats and rounds. The total prize pool was $4,000 with Shay Paxton also the winner.
This afternoon, the Coca-Cola Wild Winter Weekend continued with the 'Leap for Loot' hyping the crowd up. The 'Leap' is a big air event for skiers and boarders. Held at the aerial site at Perisher Valley, 50 entrants completed one jump with the view of making the top 10 ten. The top 10 contested the final and the $4,000 prize money was split, with Nick Gregory walking away with a smile and his share. The 'Leap for Loot' is an expression session for aerial skiers and boarders. Competitors were judged on their take offs, aerial actions and their landings.
On Saturday, skiers and boarders tackle the world famous ' Coca-Cola Dash for Cash'. The 'Dash' is a winner takes all, limited rules downhill/uphill/downhill race that has created some very exciting snow action since its inception. Skiing legend Steven Lee was the inuagural winner and this year he again joins the TV commentary team. The 'Dash' will be held at the traditional location on and below Olympic on Mt Perisher. Skiers and boarders compete in separate events. Racing starts at 11am.
On Sunday August 3, day 4 and the final day of the Coca-Cola Wild Winter Weekend, the very popular 'Tubes' racing and the 'Jump for Cash' events take place. The 'Tubes' will be held in the Perisher half pipe around 10am. The ' Tubes' racing is comprised of elimination heats, with winners advancing to the next round till a final group remains and the prize money is shared. The ' Tubes' event is a slipping, sliding inflatable inner tubes scramble. Spectators can see all the action alongside the pipe.
The final event of the Coca-Cola Wild Winter Weekend is the 'Coca-Cola Jump for Cash'. Like the 'Dash for Cash' event, people have been having fun at Perisher Blue by jumping into this special icy pool for the last 14 years. They have jumped solo, in teams, in fancy dress, on contraptions, long skis, snowboards, surf boats and even on fire. Cash prizes are awarded for distance, the best splash, money bags are even suspended in the air for those 'leaping loonies' who go for height rather than distance. Its all fun and makes great action. Spectators who are early can get a seat in the grandstand located alongside the pool and rate each jump, otherwise there are plenty of good viewing sites around the pool or above the 'Jump for Cash' site on the deck of the Sundeck Hotel. The jumps commence around 12.30pm.
The seven events will be recorded for television and telecast as a 2 hour special on Channel 9's Wide World of Sports on August 23rd between 2 4pm and later on Fox Sports.
