Undiscovered yet overwhelmingly beautiful. Why this region of Italy still remains very much a secret & why you must uncover it for yourself........ The green heart of Italy is overlooked for its counterparts of Tuscany and Rome, yet the small land-locked region of Umbria really does offer something special and an experience not to be missed. Amongst mountains, nature reserves and forests, ancient castles, towers and churches, we share our top five things you must know about Umbria
- Fall for it: The Marmore Falls is a truly breath-taking 165m waterfall in the Nera River Park and dates back to the Roman rule. Those brave enough can enjoy rafting, canoeing and cannoning and there are also some of the best walking trails too.
- A taste of luxury: Umbria is known for its wonderful gastronomy and their flavoursome truffles. The more common black truffle is used in many dishes, but do try the more valuable & rare white truffle which is found in Orvieto and Gubbio, that can fetch hundreds of thousands of pounds for a good sized portion!
- City of Love: The Italians love all things.... well love-ly! So it is no surprise they have a city known as the 'City of Lovers'. On Saint Valentine's Day, the city of Terni sees the beginning of an entire month's celebrations including food and wine tastings, live music, cultural events and large festas throughout the city, all to celebrate love!
- A journey: The Franciscan Path of Peace, the Via Francigena links Assisi to Gubbio and is an historical road of Christianity that allows those that walk it to explore the collection of churches, the artistic and architectural treasures along its path.
- Jazz hands: For the last 36 years, Umbria has celebrated the fabulous Umbria Jazz Festival that sees leading figures in the music world flock to the region and play to huge crowds all for the love of music. 10 days in July of music and atmosphere, it is one of a kind.
