NEWS FROM THE REGIONS

PISA'S 850th ANNIVERSARY

The Tower of Pisa, one of the most admired and famous buildings in the world, has begun its 850th birthday celebrations after the laying of its first stone in 1173. The city has arranged a programme that will last until 9 August 2024, which includes an exhibition featuring the paintings, engravings, photographs and films that have immortalised the work over the years - 'The Many Lives of the Pisa Bell Tower'.

NEW EXHIBITIONS

EL GRECO EXHIBITION AT PALAZZO REALE

Milan, 11th October – 11th February 2023

Milan's first-ever El Greco exhibition, featuring prestigious international loans, reinterprets the artist's career with fresh research. This groundbreaking event examines Italian influences on his early work and offers a new perspective on his later Toledo period. Don't miss this transformative experience in art appreciation.

GOYA EXHIBITION AT PALAZZO REALE

Milan, 31st October – 3rd March 2024

Francisco Goya's life spanned an era of historic turbulence, and his art mirrored these transformative times. In an upcoming exhibition with seven thematic sections, travellers will delve into how Goya's innovative approach shattered traditional artistic rules and norms, giving birth to a revolutionary language in painting. FESTIVALS AND CULTURAL EVENTS

ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL

Rome, 6th September – 19th November

Since its 1986 inception, the Romaeuropa Festival has steadily ascended to become Italy's premier cultural event. In 2006, the Wall Street Journal recognised it among Europe's top four cultural festivals. A captivating blend of cult and trendiness, the festival has consistently delivered three decades of contemporary creativity, nurturing a dedicated and growing audience in Rome.

UMBRIA JAZZ WEEKEND

Terni, 14th – 17th September

Travellers can enjoy a weekend in the heart of Terni to experience together the energy in the name of great music. From club to the streets of the city centre to the Marmore Falls, Umbria Jazz Weeknd is a four-day festival full of must-see events.

ROME FILM FEST

Rome, 18th – 29th October

The annual Rome Film Fest will be held from October 18th to 29th, 2023 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and in other venues throughout the city. The Auditorium Parco della Musica has been the heart of the Rome Film Fest since 2006 with the red carpet and the screening rooms. The event hosts a large and challenging programme of screenings, master classes, tributes, retrospectives, panels, and special events.

SCIENCE FESTIVAL

Genoa, 26th October – 5th November

The Genoa Science Festival is one of the main international events for the spread of scientific culture, and it has become a landmark for both audiences and participants over the years. A festival that celebrates the wonder of science and, in the meantime, makes people discover the beauty of Genoa. Scientists, researchers, artists, authors, as well as institutions, associations and companies, meet the public to make science touch, see and understand without boundaries, in an open comparison free from academic approaches.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC AND ART

Rome and Vatican, 4th – 8th November

For true fans of classical music with an extraordinary atmosphere, Italy offers the Festival of Sacred Music and Art. An impressive music festival has been held by The Fund for Sacred Art and Music (Fondazione pro Musica e Arte Sacra) since 2002. This is a place where music meets architecture, and the most famous masterpieces of sacred music are performed in the extraordinary settings of Rome's Patriarchal Basilicas. Guests attending will be sensitised the public to the activities of the Foundation for Sacred Music and Art, which raises funds for the restoration of religious artefacts and buildings that belong to all mankind. 

 

 

41 TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

Turin, 24th November – 2nd December

Torino Film Festival is an international film festival held in Turin every November and it is the second largest film festival in Italy. It was founded in 1982 by film critic and academic Gianni Rondolino as Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani or the Festival of Young Cinema. Since its origins, forty-one years ago, the festival has been known internationally as one of the most established events devoted to new cinema.

RAVENNA FESTIVAL 2023 – AUTUMN TRILOGY

Ravenna, 16th – 22nd December

Since 2012, Ravenna Festival has proposed the Trilogia d'Autunno (Autumn Trilogy) with excellent artists and amazing performances on the stage of Teatro Alighieri. Traditionally, the programme of the Autumn Trilogy is full of references to Dante Alighieri. The great poet lived the last three years of his life right in Ravenna, where he finished the last chapter of the Divine Comedy. Travellers can still find his footsteps in the so-called “Silence Zone” where his grave is located.

 

FOOD AND WINE EVENTS

BRA CHEESE FESTIVAL 2023

Bra, 15th – 18th September

The biennial International Cheese Festival in Bra is a great event for all of those passionate about eating well, not only in Italy. After 21 years and 11 editions, Cheese is certainly the most revered event of its kind in Italy, as well as being organised by Slow Food, the City of Bra and the Ente Turismo Alba, Bra, Langhe and Roero. Cheese is usually held over the 3rd weekend of September and attracts around 200,000 people.

MARINO WINE FESTIVAL

Marino, 29th September – 2nd October

The Marino Wine Festival, known as Sagra dell'Uva di Marino, is a cherished annual event in the Roman Hills, traditionally taking place on the first Sunday of October. This remarkable grape celebration beckons thousands from across the region, featuring vibrant processions, period attire, and enchanting music. However, the true spectacle unfolds when the Fountain of the Four Moors erupts with a cascading flow of white wine, generously shared with the exuberant crowd, making it a must-attend event this season.

 

EUROCHOCOLATE

 

Perugia, 13th – 22nd October

 

Perugia, the heart of Italy's Umbria region, will host an annual chocolate spectacle known as 'EuroChocolate,' a tradition since 1993 that now stands as Europe's largest chocolate festival. This renowned event features Italy's iconic Perugina, famous for Baci, alongside esteemed brands like Lindt, Milka, and Caffarel. Festival-goers can savour a delightful array of treats and souvenirs, from chocolate-covered bananas to indulgent liqueurs, molds, and decadent bricks. With experimental tastings, captivating street performances, chocolate sculpting, and even chocolate-infused spa experiences on offer, October promises something to delight every chocolate enthusiast.

 

INTERNATIONAL TRUFFLE FAIR

 

Alba, 7th October – 3rd December

 

The White Truffle Festival is one of the largest truffle festivals in Italy. Despite the event revolves around the truffle, presented in all its forms, the fair is not just limited to this. There are art exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts, medieval representations such as the Palio degli Asini, historical and folkloristic commemorations, cinema festival activities for children and much more, which each year attract thousands of visitors from around the world. 

 

NATIONAL CHESTNUT FAIR

 

Cuneo, 13th – 15th October

 

A must-event for every gourmet and for anyone who wants to experience a weekend immersed in the genuine food heritage and atmosphere of Cuneo is the National Chestnut Fair in Cuneo.  Considered one of the most important food festivals in Italy, the fair “Made in Granda” (“the Big province”, as the Cuneo province is called) is a 3-days lively event invading the main squares and the streets of the historic town centre, with autumn fragrances, colours and flavours.  The Fair is a unique showcase of the excellent food and wine products and ancient tradition of the land with hundreds of producers coming from all over Italy and Europe.

 

EIN PROSIT: WINE FESTIVAL

 

Friuli Venezia Giulia, 17th – 22nd October

This food and wine festival is divided into different sections: dinners with the chefs, in which great Italian chefs propose the dishes of their cuisine paired with wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia; wine tastings, which suggest to wine lovers a structured approach to wine, leading them through the tasting step by step; flavour workshops, an appointment with the flavours of the Region and of Italy, to discover combinations between excellent gastronomic specialties and native Italian wines.

MERANO WINE FESTIVAL

Merano, South Tyrol, 3rd – 7th November

The annual Merano Wine Festival is known for celebrating and showcasing high-quality Italian and international wines, as well as artisanal food products. An elegant historic building, Kurhaus of Merano, and several other curated serve as a fitting backdrop for wine tastings and culinary experiences. In addition to wine, the festival highlights other artisanal food products, including cheeses, cured meats, olive oils, chocolates, and more.

SPORT EVENTS

RYDER CUP 2023

Rome, 25th September – 1st October

The 44th Ryder Cup Matches will be held in Italy in autumn 2023 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio near Rome. The biennial event was originally scheduled from 30 September to 2 October 2022, before the 43rd matches were postponed into 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LAKE MAGGIORE MARATHON

Arona, 5th November

With its course entirely along Piedmont side of Lake Maggiore, the Lake Maggiore Marathon is considered by everyone as one of the most panoramic race in the world. The Lake Maggiore Marathon is organised under the rules of FIDAL (Italian Athletic Federation), IAAF (International Association Athletics Federations), EAA (European Athletic Association) and AIMS (Association International Marathon and Distance Races).

TORINO CITY MARATHON

Turin, 5th November

The marathon takes place every year in November, starting and finishing in the historic Piazza Castello in the centre of Turin, Italy. The course is flat and fast, passing by some of the most iconic landmarks of the city, such as the Mole Antonelliana, the Royal Palace, and the Po River. The marathon also offers a scenic view of the Alps and the Superga Basilica on the horizon.
