To coincide with the imminent release of multiple Academy Award nominated science fiction ‘her’ starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson, Little Domain wanted to delve deeper into the mystery of love in today’s digital age and find out if there really is any room left for good old fashioned romance.
Little Domain asked 1000 singles how they would best want to show their feelings to a potential new partner.
Results from the investigation showed that even in today’s current state, where online is everywhere, we still all long for a little traditional old fashioned romance. Over 60% of singles revealed that they would rather declare their feelings for a new partner face to face rather than via social media or text.
The Midlands was found to be the most romantic region, with 74% of East Midlands singles being more likely to let their feelings out face to face or with a grand romantic gesture. But it’s not just the traditional romance people from the Midlands excel at; singles from the West Midlands were 44% more likely to use social media to get a date than anywhere else in the UK.
In fact, the further north you travel in the UK, the more likely you are to find a little romance, it seems. Singles from the North of England are 68% more likely to let their romantic feelings out face to face. But it’s bad news for the South East, with only 6% of singles asked saying they would ever consider a grand romantic gesture.
Little Domain found that even though face to face declarations of love won overall, social media and texting still play an important part in the dating process. With 1 in 4 revealing they use social media to help find a date and 1 in 5 admitting they would rather text a potential partner their feelings rather than meeting up.
The survey found that all across the UK results showed that just under 25% of people would let a potential partner know their feelings via social media. People in the North West are 10% more likely to tweet or ‘facebook’ their feelings compared to only 3% of people in Scotland.
So how about the gender divide? Who are the most romantic: men or women? Little Domain found that it’s men who are the true romantics. Men are more than twice as likely to show their feelings with a romantic gesture as women, who are over 30% more likely than men to let a potential partner know their feelings via text or email.
It gets better as you get older as Little Domain found that people aged 35 and above are the most romantic, with 95% of people asked revealing that face to face or with a romantic gesture is the best way to win the affections of a potential new partner. And it gets even better with age, as 73% of people aged 45-54 prefer traditional romance, and a whopping 79% of over 55s stick to the good old fashioned face to face romantic gesture.
Just 6% of 18-34 year olds would consider a romantic gesture as a way to win a potential partner over! But there’s still hope for the younger generation as 54% did admit they would prefer to let their feelings out face to face.
