The Year the Earth Stood Still

One year on - what has changed for tourism?

This week marks one year since the world's borders closed following the pandemic being declared by WHO on March 11. Nobody knew what lay in the year ahead, not just the human cost, but the decimation that would be brought upon the global tourism and travel industry.

Back in April 2020, author, entrepreneur, pioneer of community tourism and founder of G Adventures, Bruce Poon Tip, wrote a short 'instabook' called Unlearn: The Year the Earth Stood Still. This free ebook, which has been downloaded thousands of times, served as a love letter to travellers, sharing Bruce's hopes for what tourism could look like on the other side of the pandemic, and highlighting the opportunity given to us to reshape travel.

One year later, we invite you to join Bruce for a discussion on what, if anything, has changed. Are travellers looking for a better way to travel and what does the return to travel look like? What do travellers want, and how can we return to travelling both ethically and responsibly?

Date: March 19, 2021

Time: 09.00am AEST / 11.00am NZT

“We can rethink everything we thought was normal. Why fight so damn hard to return to normal when the opportunity to transform travel is on the other side of this mess?”

- Bruce Poon Tip, Unlearn: The Year the Earth Stood Still

Bruce will be taking questions in advance and on the day. We look forward to welcoming you to this virtual event as we reflect on what we have 'unlearned' in this past year to change how we travel for the better in the future.
