Introducing One World Adventures - Enriching Conservation Trips for Schools and Groups

One World Adventures

One World Adventures is a new tailor-made educational programme offering personal development journeys for young people to gain first-hand experience of conservation projects within local communities in Asia, Africa, South America and the Mediterranean.  Unlike other 'gap-year' expeditions, youngsters, usually aged between 15-18, learn sustainable solutions through hands-on experience and acquire invaluable vocational skills along the way. All projects assist local communities to secure a better future for indigenous wildlife and their natural surroundings, raising money for registered, local charities.

Educational trips typically last from 10 to 28 days and are scheduled year-round, with the lead teacher travelling for free. Being at least 18 months in the planning, they enable schools, colleges, and scout and guide groups to work as a team to fundraise and finance their trip.  Leading up to their departure, groups are encouraged to develop an Adventure Chronicle, perhaps a website, a book or Facebook page with designated roles such as marketing manager, website developer, fundraising events co-ordinator, planner or trip recorder.  With a qualified UK-based leader and an in-country specialist, too, groups are given the tools to maximise their potential for learning vocational skills.

Mrs Black, a Group Teacher with the Big Cat Conservation Project in Namibia said: From tracking cheetah and leopard to seeing amazing wildlife at waterholes, it will be a privilege to share this experience with students and see how much they learn from the opportunity.”

Itineraries are tailor-made to suit each group's requirements and suggested trips include:

Flipper Nippers in Costa Rica – Protecting endangered turtle varieties which nest on tropical beaches in Costa Rica, responsibilities vary according to season but may include night patrol on beaches to ward-off poachers, manning the sea turtle hatchery and recording data.

Enriching Education in India – Within schools in New Delhi, work with the local community to redevelop poorly maintained facilities to enhance education and recreation, while engaging in a rewarding cultural exchange.

Aquatic Abundance in Indonesia – Train as a scuba diver undertaking marine research and population surveys in coral reefs. Participants master the art of underwater diving in the UK, before progressing to open water diving in their chosen destination, eventually doing reef and wall dives to survey marine life.

Big Cats and Kraals in Namibia – Youngsters work with local farmers, building enclosures in farming communities to help protect livestock from big cat attacks, while also learning about the problems facing big cats.

Rainforest Rehab in Peru – Help restore Amazonian rainforests and make a valued contribution to scientific research, learning tracking techniques and data collection to monitor the biodiversity within different terrains.

Protecting primates in Uganda – Assist with chimpanzee conservation research whilst helping to restore key habitats by tree planting in areas that have suffered deforestation, and promoting the protection of chimpanzees within the community.

Coastal Clean-up – Closer to home, learn to scuba dive in the clear waters that surround Malta, before participating in a coastal clean-up, taking action against marine debris - the biggest threat to the world's oceans.

One World Adventures is part of The Natural Travel Collection, whose portfolio includes Wildlife Worldwide, Dive Worldwide and The Travelling Naturalist - an independent group of tour operators specialising in sustainable wildlife holidays.
