In search of unique and exciting adventures for over 30 years, the Himalayan walking and trekking holiday experts, Mountain Kingdoms, are going back to their roots and introducing two new, remote, camping treks that offer a genuine wilderness experience in Nepal and Bhutan.
Namun La Wilderness Trek, Nepal
For anyone seeking a relatively short but challenging Himalayan trek through genuinely wild mountain scenery, this little-known trek in the heart of the Annapurnas is the perfect choice. Once a Gurung trade route, the trail is now primarily used by villagers and pilgrims seeking to wash away their sins in the sacred lake of Dudh Pokhari. Western trekkers are rarely sighted until the path joins the main Annapurna Circuit at Timang for the final day of walking. With roads now encroaching on the traditional circuit at both ends, this new trekking trail is an inspired alternative for the discerning trekker.
The trek begins at Siklis, a traditional Gurung village, weaving through rhododendron and bamboo forests to reach open meadows with superb views of Himalayan giants such as Machhapuchare, Annapurnas II and IV and Lamjung Himal. Every day the scenery is sublime and it is incredible that a route so close to the busy Annapurna Circuit can be uninhabited, unspoilt and totally wild. The high point on this trek, the Namun La (pass) at 4,850m/15,912ft, provides a tough and rewarding objective with uninterrupted views of Manaslu by way of reward. The descent from the pass is steep but offers a final taste of the wild before returning to tea house 'civilisation' in Timang nine days after the start.

Dagana Wilderness Trek, Bhutan
Unique to Mountain Kingdoms, this pioneering new trek in Bhutan goes completely off-the-beaten-track to the little-known region of Dagana in the southernmost reaches of the country. This verdant, wildlife-rich area has little development and offers the opportunity to discover a world far-removed from modern-day life.
Starting in the high mountains close to Thimphu and descending to the dense lowland forests of the south, the trail ranges from 4,720m above sea level to a lowly 200m. It crosses several ecological zones, rich with flora and fauna, and has an impressively diverse and rugged landscape of high mountain passes, alpine meadows, dense forest, sacred lakes and sub-tropical jungle - the territory of tigers, leopards and bears! With little chance of seeing anyone other than the occasional yak herder, this is an ideal trek for those with a sense of adventure seeking a true wilderness experience in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon.
