Intrepid Travel is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the US National Park Service this year with a new collection of trips that will take travellers deep into the spectacular American wilderness.
These four new active, one-off trips range from cycling through southern Utah, kayaking in Yellowstone, sailing off the coast of Florida and hiking beneath California's ancient sequoia trees.
“These trips are expeditionary in nature and are designed to get under the skin of America's great National Parks,” says James Thornton, Managing Director. “Rather than skimming the surface, we're encouraging travellers to celebrate all the parks have to offer – whether that's on foot, bike, kayak or boat – and have some serious adventure.”
Hike and Kayak Yellowstone
The world's very first designated National Park is home to wolves, grizzlies and the densest concentration of geysers on the planet. After checking out the highlights of Yellowstone National Park – Old Faithful, Fountain Paint Pots and the park's own Grand Canyon – this expedition will head deep into the wilderness for hiking, including an exploration of nearby Grand Teton National Park. Travellers will camp on secluded Grassy Island, explore Jackson Lake by Kayak and float down the Snake River while eagles fly high above.
Departure date: 3 September 2016
Price: from $2995 per person

Hike Sequoia and Mt Whitney
Travellers will witness California's spectacular deserts, lakes and the world's tallest trees on a hike to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48 states. The trip will take the lesser-used scenic route through the redwood groves of Sequoia National Park and pine forests of the Pacific Crest Trail, made famous by Cheryl Strayed (and then Reese Witherspoon) in the film Wild. A true wilderness experience awaits travellers as they camp along the trail and hike through forests and alpine lakes, with the support of experienced guides and pack mules.
Departure date: 10 September 2016
Price: from $3995 per person

Cycle Bryce and Zion
Utah's National Parks, known as 'The Mighty Five', are some of America's most popular and this trip hits two – Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon – on two wheels. Cycling is the ultimate way to see the stunning red rock formations of southern Utah. Starting and finishing in Las Vegas, the trip spends a full day in both Bryce and Zion National Parks, so travellers will get an in-depth experience of both.
Departure date: 24 September 2016
Price: from $2195 per person

Lower Keys and Dry Tortugas Sailing Adventure
Located in the stunning Florida Keys of America's south-eastern tip, Dry Tortugas is the most isolated and least visited National Park in the USA, only accessible by boat or seaplane. Consisting of 100-square miles across seven small islands, the park is home to sea turtles, frigates and schools of colourful fish, making for some fantastic snorkelling and beach-bumming experiences, as well as the historical Fort Jefferson. This sailing expedition will chart a course through tropical archipelagos to Dry Tortugas National Park on board a small yacht with a maximum of eight travellers and includes a night to unwind at the end of the adventure in Key West.
Departure date: 15 October 2016
Price: from $2235 per person
