International & Michelin Star Chefs Hit The Kitchens For 10 Fest Azores Food Festival

Azores Promotions Board

You be the judge! The archipelago of the Azores invites travellers to take part in 10 Fest Azores from 20-29 June, a ten day food and gastronomy event where renowned and Michelin Star chefs from around the world hit the kitchen to best represent the Azores’ delicious cuisine and dishes.

The festival, which will take place for 10 consecutive nights at the beautiful Anfiteatro Restaurant in Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, will see the chefs come together to prepare 10 dinners representing traditional and modern takes on Azorean cuisine, for approximately 700 travellers and guests. Each night, one of these world-class chefs from countries including mainland Portugal, France, Denmark, Germany and America will head up a team of chefs from the Azorean School of Tourism & Hospitality Training in a bid to offer the best menu to approximately 70 guests each night.

Renowned Michelin Star Chef David Foure from Nice, France will kick off the festival with his menu on the first night (20 June), while Michelin Star Chef Vítor Matos from Amarante, Portugal will close the show with his menu on 29 June.

The festival will also feature barmen, winemakers and sommeliers from around the world. The evening of 22 June will see 10 local chefs from São Miguel and the Azorean School of Tourism & Hospitality Training team up to offer their own special night of Azorean cuisine.

The Azores islands offer a number of delicious dishes including Cozido das Furnas’, a traditional stew containing local sausage, beef and a variety of vegetables which is cooked underground by the heat generated by a volcano. Fresh fish and seafood dishes are also bountiful and include squid, clams, tuna, swordfish, limpets and crabs, all locally caught and fresh from the sea to the diner plate. Each region also produces its own local cheese, often enjoyed as an appetiser.

Editor’s Notes:

The nine islands of the Azores are in the middle of the North Atlantic and belong to Portugal. They can be reached by direct flight from the UK in less than four hours from April – October, or via Lisbon. These volcanic islands are renowned for their volcanic craters, beautiful lakes, stunning sea, thermal pools and mountain vistas, their impressive flora and fauna and marine life. The islands have played a hugely important part in European maritime history, due to their strategically significant position as the westernmost point of Europe.
