Academy Award nominee and original Ghostbuster cast member, Dan Aykroyd and Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, and will be heading to Alberta, Canada this August to get their hands dirty hunting multi-million year old dinosaur fossils.
Allen and Aykroyd will join other international glitterati as well as a team of palaeontologists from around the globe for three days of events celebrating the completion of the new Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum building.
The Museum is a $34.6 million facility that will open Dec. 1, 2014, named after renowned Canadian palaeontologist Dr. Philip Currie, who inspired the characters in movie trilogy Jurassic Park. The Museum is located in the Pipestone Creek area, in Northern Alberta, which includes one of the best deposits of dinosaur fossils in the world, most of which are still in the ground. Most of the bones are from pachyrhinosaurus dinosaurs, and are estimated to be from at least 70 million years ago.
Dan Aykroyd, a self-described dinosaur aficionado, will be honoured In recognition of his fund raising efforts for the facility. After excavating fossils from two major sites, one of them among the world's densest horned dinosaur bonebeds, Aykroyd will lead the Mighty Peace Harley Davidson inaugural family ride on a 'Dino Bike' – a 2014 Harley Davidson Softail Breakout, autographed by Mr. Aykroyd. Celebrations will culminate in the Amber Ball, a VIP gala fundraiser for the Museum.
Alberta is rich in dinosaur finds and even has a smaller cousin of the mighty T-Rex named after the Province. Albertasaurus lived in western North America in the Late Cretaceous Period.
Dino-hunters who are anxious to explore Alberta's fossil history before the opening of the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum can head south and follow the 48 km Dinosaur Trail; a chance to explore Alberta's badlands, join an authentic dinosaur dig and wonder at the abundant fossils, unusual wildlife and stunning landscapes of Dinosaur Provincial Park.
