Singapore, 18 February: Insight Vacations, the world’s finest escorted tour company, has teamed up with the Whitmuir Organic Farm in Edinburgh to promote sustainable food and living. Alongside the Treadright Foundation, the non-profit organisation set up by the Travel Corporation to promote sustainable tourism among its family of brands, Insight Vacations and Treadright have pledged funds towards this working farm to further develop its sustainable efforts in the next few years.
Feeding the world fairly and sustainably without destroying biodiversity is a major global challenge for the 21st century, and as a result there are very few arenas in which the issue of food sustainability can be discussed in an accessible, tangible and practical way. Therefore, all 140 acres of Whitmuir Farm is being developed as a Living Learning Space that will engage people of all ages to visit and learn about the issues concerning sustainable food, both locally and globally.
Insight Vacations and The TreadRight Foundation is contributing towards this development, starting with the construction of a farm yurt, where people can gather for demonstrations, cooking and sharing food from the farm while learning about what’s involved in growing food sustainably. Insight has also committed to funding the development of the farms outside cooking facilities and farm access improvements for 2015, and in 2016 they will fund the purchase of the electric, solar powered vehicle that will enable people with restricted mobility to more easily access the farm.
‘Insight Vacations is proud to partake in such a project with the owners of Whitmuir Organic Farm. By providing a place where people can gather and learn about the process of food from its organic state up to human consumption, it will increase awareness and appreciation on sustainable food & living. In supporting this project, we hope to build a platform for future generations to increase such similar efforts in other farming communities.’ says Sheryl Lim, Regional Director of Insight Vacations (Asia).
Whitmuir Farm wants to bring the need for sustainability in food production into sharp focus by teaching the general public about food sustainability in a practical and interesting way. So by building a living learning space, they have the unique opportunity to teach people of all ages about the journey from soil to plate on the tourist route from England to Scotland. Guests of Insight Vacations have the opportunity to visit Whitmuir Farm with itineraries such as ‘Scenic Britain’ and the ‘Best of Britain’.
