Inside Vancouver's Stanley Park

Destination Vancouver

With 1,000 acres of forests, lakes, beaches and trails, Stanley Park is a must-see for visitors to Vancouver. Recently recognized as one of the World's Best City Parks by Travel + Leisure magazine, Stanley Park has something for everyone, including a stunning nine-kilometer seawall, the Vancouver Aquarium and a collection of First Nations totem poles. But what about the park's lesser-known gems? Here's a look at our top park activities:

Hike to Beaver Lake. A network of well-marked trails winds through the park's expansive forests. For a quick and rewarding hike, pick up the Beaver Lake trail, which leads to a lily-covered pond frequented by ducks, raccoons and even a few namesake beavers.

Explore Lost Lagoon. This man-made lake is hidden at the park's overlooked southern edge, in the shadow of downtown's high-rises. Take a scenic walk around the tree-lined shore and watch out for swans and herons stalking the shallows.

Work on your short game at Stanley Park Pitch & Putt. This 18-hole, par-3 golf course is located inside the park and bordered by a rhododendron garden that flourishes in summer. Sculpted fairways, lush greens and towering trees add up to a memorable afternoon for duffers of all levels. Rounds start at just $12.95.
Take in a twilight show at the Malkin Bowl. This outdoor theatre is set on a grassy slope in the heart of Stanley Park. During summer evenings, local troupe Theatre Under the Stars stages shows and musicals as the sun sets over nearby English Bay. On tap this year: Legally Blonde the Musical and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Soak in the sunset at The Teahouse. Situated on a grassy bluff overlooking English Bay, this restaurant tucked away on the park's western edge is great for viewing summer sunsets. Fresh West Coast cuisine, with an emphasis on local seafood, makes a perfect end to a day in the park.

Garden-hop. Stanley Park boasts spectacular gardens, some of which remain in bloom year-round. Take a stroll through the Ted and Mary Greig Rhododendron Garden and view 4,500-plus hybrid rhododendron and azalea plants. Afterwards, visit the Stanley Park Rose Garden and wander among some 3,500 vibrantly coloured rose plants.

Mark your calendars: Stanley Park celebrates its 125th birthday on August 24 and 25, with free celebrations that include live performances, cultural experiences, historical walking and cycling tours, and more.
