Feature - World's biggest fish return to Western Australia

Western Australia's Whale Shark season has officially commenced, with passengers aboard the season's first tour in the Ningaloo Marine Park swimming with a seven-metre gentle giant just a fortnight ago.

Whale Sharks, the largest fish in the sea, are expected to remain in the Ningaloo Marine Park until late July. World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef  is located along WA's mid-north coast andis considered one of the most easily accessible and reliable places in the world to swim with these harmless marine leviathans with tours offered from Coral Bay and Exmouth.

Australia's Coral Coast Chief Executive Officer, David O'Malley, said last year's season was a record breaker, with 20,600 passengers aboard 1,100 whale shark tours that departed during the season.

Whale Shark spotter planes are commissioned by tour operators during the season to locate Whale Sharks for tour boats, which contributed to last year's 98 per cent success rate in sightings for tours.

"We are confident that 2014 will be another hugely successful season, with people from all corners of the globe expected to converge on the towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay for their chance to cross this amazing experience off their bucket lists," Mr O'Malley said.

Growing up to 18 metres in length, graceful Whale Sharks are filter feeders and are safe for humans to swim with.

Whale Sharks are listed as vulnerable to extinction and are protected in Western Australia Part of the fee visitors pay for tours goes towards the whale shark protection and research.WA-based whale shark conservation organisation, ECOCEAN, is about to launch a crowd funding project to raise $25,000 for a tagging program at Ningaloo Reef in 2014.

Following the success of tracking whale shark, 'BooBoo' in 2013 in conjunction with Tourism Western Australia, ECOCEAN is keen to track 'Stumpy' (the first whale shark recorded in their photo library) as part of a full 12-month migration study. Visit Ecocean's website for further information on the project. youcaring.com

For more information on Ningaloo Whale Shark tours visit australiascoralcoast.com.

While whale sharks are a major drawcard for visitors to the Ningaloo region, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy all year round.

• Swim with manta rays, go snorkelling, diving or sailing
• Dive on Exmouth's Navy Pier, voted one of the world's top on-shore dives

How to get there:

QantasLink and Virgin Australia Regional offer regular flights from Perth to Learmonth Airport, which services Exmouth and Coral Bay.
