Indonesia's Hidden Heritage - Cultural Journeys of Discovery

by Stephanie Brookes and David Metcalf

Book Launched at Museum National, Jakarta March 2014

Stephanie Brookes and David Metcalf have been exploring remote destinations in Indonesia for the past 12 months.  Hidden Heritage is a series of highly illustrated travelogues covering the very thread of life that weaves its way through Indonesia by way of dance, music, festivals, customs and culture.  It is Stephanie's hope that the book will inspire people to travel and explore Indonesia.  " Indonesia has more variety of cultures than any country on earth," said David, "I hope this book provides some understanding of the ancient cultures that exist here and ultimately, gives us a greater understanding of ourselves".

The book covers 12 ethnic groups, 12 destinations and 12 months of travel.  It is 120 pages of colour photos.

REVIEW QUOTES:

1.  "From Tengger people in the highlands of East Java who worship a volcano to the animist village of Wae Rebo in Flores, from the upriver Dayak Kenya tribe of northern Kalimantan to the myths and legends of Sumbawa in the south-eastern islands, this intrepid husband and wife team have assembled first-hand travel accounts and an evocative collection of images that unequivocally and eloquently describe the Indonesia of today."

Bill Dalton, author of Indonesia Handbook

2.  "This book not only captures the beauty of Indonesia's nature, but it also touches on the culture of the untouched destinations of Indonesia. It tells an untold story and explores the unexplored paths. If a picture might inspire a thousand travellers, this book inspires one thing in me; I haven't seen anything yet."
