IIFA Going Green at The Venetian Macao Eco-friendly awards show July 6

Venetian Macau Limited

This year's prestigious IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) Weekend events at The Venetian® Macao will be environmentally friendly. Sands ECO360° environmental measures will be implemented for the IIFA Awards ceremony, meetings and stay period, July 4-6, 2013. Green measures in place during the three-day event - which celebrates the best in Indian cinema - are aimed at reducing, reusing, recycling and sustaining.

"Our green meeting initiatives will always be a priority as well as a long-term project for us at The Venetian Macao," said Gene Capuano, Vice President of Convention and Exhibition Operations, Venetian Macau Ltd. "Our entire operations team is on board with creating more environmentally responsible events for our clients. Being able to educate and support them with these initiatives is of the utmost importance to us."

The Venetian Macao's Green Meeting Concierge team introduced the IIFA committee to the Sands ECO360° Meetings programme, which combines The Venetian Macao's high-performance facilities, standard sustainable practices, green meeting options, community programmes, and much more. More information can be found at www.venetianmacao.com/macau-business-meeting/green-meetings/.

Prior to IIFA's official move-in, The Venetian Macao's operations team held a briefing session and demonstration with the IIFA committee on available green meeting arrangements such as the recycling programme, air-conditioner and lighting systems and meeting room settings.

The IIFA committee will actively promote the sustainability programme by encouraging event delegates to participate in the upstream recycling programme, and by arranging trainings and briefings with their work crew on the event sustainability objectives and environmental knowledge.

An Event Sustainability Report will be produced after the event, documenting all notable sustainability highlights and achievements. The report will include the Sands ECO360° Event Impact Statement, which summarises the event's carbon footprint, energy consumption, water usage, and recycling rate.

"Since 2007, IIFA has been committed to the 'green' cause. From a energy-efficient awards event to the world's first ever green carpet, we continue to create awareness and voice environmental concerns through prominent celebrities from the Indian film fraternity who vehemently support our cause at the IIFAs," said Sabbas Joseph, Director - Wizcraft International & IIFA. "We strongly support The Venetian Macao's contribution towards environmental preservation and regeneration and will implement these plans at the upcoming VIDEOCON D2H IIFA Weekend."

The Green Meetings initiative for IIFA will include the use of strategically located recycling bins; energy and water conservation by monitoring lights and air conditioners, and by the absence of tablecloths and seat covers whenever possible; and water flow controllers in the back-of-house areas, which has led to a 70 per cent reduction in water usage.

IIFA planners have requested featuring more vegetarian selections on the menu, and that the IIFA green carpet to be reused. After the IIFA show is over, the wood used to prepare the backdrop will be dismantled and recycled as part of a new wood recycling programme to be implemented at Sands China Ltd. properties this summer.

A no-idling policy is in force for loading and unloading by contractors. Energy-efficient audio-visual technology will be used, and batteries with some life left will be reused. In addition, Sands China Ltd. will support the tree planting program under the Nature Conservancy's campaign.

Several green measures come standard to in-room guests at The Venetian Macao. Eco-linen signage is placed on beds and in bathrooms to encourage guests to reuse linen and towels. Empty plastic bottles left in hotel rooms are collected and recycled; and any used soaps are donated in support of the soap recycling efforts of "Clean the World" - a programme which Sands China Ltd. recently sponsored. Water-saving shower heads currently in place flow at the rate of 8 litres per minute - a 33 per cent reduction from regular shower heads. And when guests leave their rooms, lights will turn off automatically and air conditioning temperature will be adjusted. In-room guests can learn more about the Sands ECO360° programme in the room directory.

The Venetian Macao is the Official Host Destination Partner for the 14th VIDEOCON D2H IIFA Weekend, July 4 to 6. The iconic integrated resort is one of the few places in the world to have twice hosted the illustrious awards show, which has promoted the wealth of Indian cinema to global audiences by taking the awards ceremony overseas since 2000.
