Hurtigruten's New Coastal Kitchen Cookbook Takes Nordic Cuisine Worldwide

Seattle, August 2015 – A trip aboard one of Hurtigruten's coastal ships introduces guests to the natural beauty and fascinating history of Norway and, just as importantly for many, it also serves as an introduction to the earthy yet refined cuisine for which the country is becoming famous. Fans of the fresh, locally-sourced food served aboard Hurtigruten's 11 coastal ships will now be able to attempt to recreate their favorite dishes at home with the newly launched cookbook titled Norway's Coastal Kitchen. The recipes, compiled by Hurtigruten's team of chefs, range from traditional Norwegian dishes to modern twists on the tried and true like lightly fried king crab (a local delicacy) with kale salad. The cookbook is available for purchase on all Hurtigruten ships.

“Our guests are eager to learn about all aspects of Norwegian culture and we've found that connecting with traditional Nordic cuisine is an important part of the travel experience,” says Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam. “We've seen that guests from around the globe are excited by our high-quality, locally-sourced food—they find it to be authentic and unpretentious and want to take the experience home with them.”

The cookbook will be published in Norwegian as well as translations in English, German, French and Chinese Mandarin. According to Skjeldam, this will be the first Norwegian cookbook to be translated into Chinese.

Last year Hurtigruten launched a new dining concept, also called Norway's Coastal Kitchen, which puts seasonal ingredients at center stage in each dish and fosters strong partnerships with the local suppliers. Much of the produce, seafood and meat is sourced locally at the 34 ports visited on each ships' journey up and down the scenic west coast of Norway. Dishes represent traditional Norwegian cuisine prepared in upscale, creative ways.

A staple of Norwegian culture since 1893, Hurtigruten's fleet of modern ships offers a unique glimpse into Norwegian culture as they transport guests and locals alike along Norway's scenic fjord-indented west coast, stopping at 34 ports of call between the cultural center of Bergen and Kirkenes, high above the Arctic Circle. Sailing aboard Hurtigruten ships means large, comfortable lounges with panoramic windows and wonderful views from large outdoor decks; open seating for most meals; authentic Norwegian cuisine designed with fresh seasonal ingredients and incredible seafood, complemented by a comprehensive wine list; a range of comfortable cabin choices that includes large suites, some with private balconies; and a friendly, well-informed crew with multilingual tour directors, ready to offer helpful assistance.

Hurtigruten sails to the most remote of destinations as well as year-round along Norway's coast. The company's fleet of intimate ships, which each carry 100 to 646 guests, allows travelers to enjoy the scenery and culture of the destination in a relaxed atmosphere.
