Following the success of Australia the movie, Western Australias dramatic landscapes and Perth suburbs have become film sets for a number of high profile movies including Bran Nue Dae, Red Dog, Needle and the Cloudstreet mini series.
In 2008, film making legend Baz Luhrmann selected the magnificent Kimberley region to shoot scenes for Australia the movie.
Another gem of the Kimberley, the exotic pearling town of Broome, was the primary filming location for Indigenous musical comedy, Bran Nue Dae (www.brannuedaemovie.com) which was released in early 2010. The beautiful red earth, turquoise sea and deep blue sky look magical on the big screen.
The story of Bran Nue Dae begins and ends in Broome, the birth place and of writer, Jimmy Chi and stars well known Australian actors including: Geoffrey Rush, Australian Idol star Jessica Mauboy, Ernie Dingo, singer-songwriter, Missy Higgins, Ningali Lawford-Wolf, Tom Budge and up and coming actor, Rocky McKenzie (who plays leading role, Willie).
WA locations are featured strongly in the movie as the central character experiences a coming of age road trip from Perth to Broome, witnessing the magnificent and diverse West Australian landscapes along the way. Bran Nue Dae features many of Broomes iconic locations, such as Sun Pictures the worlds oldest picture gardens, Matsos Brewery, Roebuck Bay, beautiful Cable Beach and the quaint church at Beagle Bay.
WAs Pilbara region the ruggedly beautiful hub of iron ore mining in the State, will feature strongly in the movie, Red Dog (www.reddogmovie.com), which will be filmed this year and will be released in 2011. Red Dog is the real life heart-warming story of a lovable and charismatic kelpie called Koko, who united a mining community in the 1970s and 80s.
Hollywood superstar Josh Lucas will play the leading role of John in the true story based on the novel, Red Dog by Louis De Berniere.
Filming of the TV adaptation of Tim Wintons best selling, multi-award winning novel, Cloudstreet, has just finished in Perth suburb, Dalkeith.
Cloudstreet is the story of two families sharing a house during world war two and post-war years in Perth. Featuring an ensemble cast including: Essie Davis, Stephen Curry, Emma Booth and Lara Robinson, Cloudstreet will premiere on Foxtel and Austar next year.
In addition, Perth suburb, Bassendean will feature in the movie Needle (www.needlemovie.com), which is currently being filmed starring Australian actress, Jessica Marais of popular TV programme, Packed to the Rafters and Calvin Klein model, Travis Fimmel.
