The decision has been made. 530,000 holidaymakers have helped choose the 99 most popular hotels worldwide. HolidayCheck, Europe's largest travel portal, made the list based on the reviews from the past year. The 99 hotels were chosen based on their reviews and recommendations from travelers.

HolidayCheck rewards the winners with the HolidayCheck Award 2012.

The awards are divided into seven categories. These are:
- Country's No. 1 in 20 major destinations
- Most popular hotels for Couples
- Most popular hotels for Families
- Most popular hotels for a Beach Holiday
- Most popular hotels for a City Trip
- Most popular hotels for Spa & Nature
- Most popular hotels for Winter Sport

The most popular hotels are in Germany and Austria which both have seven Award Hotels. They are closely follow by Switzerland and Italy with six winners. Five awards go to Spain, four to hotels in Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Tunisia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Great Britain managed to snap up two awards, both for hotels in London, and the USA bagged one too.

In order to receive a HolidayCheck Award the hotels have to have received top reviews in their category. This means the hotel must have received at least 40 reviews in 2011 and have a recommendation rate of at least 90%. The number of suns is chosen by each guest to rate different categories. They range from 1 sun (very poor) to 6 suns (very good). In order to gain the Award the hotel must have an average of at least 3.5 suns.

The HolidayCheck Awards 2012 is a prize from travelers for travelers. It provides information about the reputation of international hotels. HolidayCheck offers travelers more than seven million opinions and experiences from guests. More than 130,000 hotels in 220 countries have been assessed by holidaymakers so far.
