This string of villages on the East End of Long Island has long been associated with the rich and famous, with celebrity residents including Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The Hamptons is home to grand mansions, upscale shopping and sparkling beaches, but behind the glitz and glamour is a strong, cultural history – as noted writers and artists have resided there - and a relaxed beachside atmosphere. For those planning a trip to The Big Apple, a combined visit to Long Island is the perfect way to get some downtime after the hustle and bustle of the city.
Long Island is easily accessible by land, rail, air and sea. Discover Long Island recommends how to spend a long weekend in this celebrity hot-spot:
Checking in: Where to stay
While The Hamptons is best known for its hamlets and villages, there are plenty of accommodation options for visitors. The Baker House 1650 bed and breakfast is a one-of-a-kind luxury experience with its 17th century architecture and grounds. With boutique bedrooms, three swimming pools, and a spa, Baker House will take you out of hectic daily life and into paradise.
Rooms start from $275 per night from January 2019.
Wine and Dine
No trip to Long Island is complete without sampling some of the local wine. The island is home to 60 different vineyards and has been voted one of the top 10 Best Wine Travel Destinations in the world. Make a stop at Wölffer Estate Vineyard, Sagaponack, and sip wine within the 55-acre grounds just a short drive away from the beach. The modern-meets-rustic tasting room is open daily all year-round.
After a busy day working up an appetite, Swallow East serves up fresh seafood in a friendly atmosphere.
Enjoy a 30-minute tour of Wölffer Estate's vineyard and wine cellar and taste four different wines for $65 per person.
Take in the views
The waterside Montauk area is steeped in history and Montauk Point Lighthouse is famed as the oldest lighthouse in New York State and the fourth oldest in the United States. Climb to the top of the 110-foot tower for a panoramic 360-degree view. On a clear day visitors can see the hustle and bustle of New York City.
Entrance costs $11 for adults and $5 for children. Opening hours vary and can be found here.
Beaches and Wellness
For a luxury visit, head to Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa. Guests have exclusive access to a 2,000-foot private white sand beach and an indoor ocean-fed seawater pool. With a spa package, guests can enjoy $125 spa credit and prosecco upon arrival for two per stay.
