Destination NSW

As the song goes `money in my pocket, tiger in my tank and Im King of the road again, the latest touring by car route launched by Tourism New South Wales will have you waxing lyrical about the New England Highway.

Stretching between Sydney and Brisbane, the New England Highway has been unmasked to reveal the road less travelled.

Rich in natural beauty with quirky and traditional Australian history, the New England Highway touring route will take you through World Heritage national parks, stunning agricultural landscapes and a myriad of country towns. All with a great yarn to tell, hidden secrets and treasures to be uncovered.

For example, you can fossick by day at Inverell, the Sapphire City, and then spend the night with Florence Cooper at Blair Athol Guesthouse. Florence lived in the house at the turn of last century and can still be heard rattling around the halls at night!

A visit to the Australian Standing Stones at Glen Innes is a must. Positioned high on a hill above Glen Innes at a Celtic ceremonial ground, the stones form a circle of 24 granite monoliths representing the hours of the day with other stones placed in specific celestial alignments.

And if you happen to be in Glenn Innes in November you can attend the National Glenn Innes Land of the Beardies and the Australian Stock Horse National Campdraft Championship which includes the Truckies Ball and Beard Growing competition.

Heading south, the Waterfall Way between Guyra and Armidale is a great way to experience the natural attractions of the New England area and take in the spectacular gorges and waterfalls to the east of Armidale.

From Armidale scoot (better still - boot scoot!) your way further along the New England Highway to Australias home of country music, Tamworth. After having your photo by the 12 metre Golden Guitar you can go and visit The Dunny Man, Fred Hiller, just outside Tamworth at Moonbi. Fred is famous for creating pint sized replicas of the Aussie outhouse and welcomes visitors to his home.

This is just a snapshot of some of the curious and colourful, natural and supernatural things to see and experience along the New England Highway.
