High summer at Wild Meadow
Historic Norfolk Estate extends 2022 holiday season with luxury glamping escapes
“What happens when you arrive at Wild Meadow on the Raynham Estate? Instant relaxation. Take a deep breath of the fresh Norfolk air and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Feel your shoulders drop, your body and mind unwind as the stresses and worries of everyday life start to drift away.”
With a plethora of glamping sites now available in the UK, how do consumers select a truly unique and luxurious experience? Wild Meadow in Norfolk takes glamping seriously: striking a rare balance between respect for its rural landscape, while providing a sophisticated level of comfort and a superior range of facilities.
Viscount Tom Raynham returned to Norfolk in 2016 and, under his thoughtful and innovative management, Raynham Estate is showing how diversification should be done and allowing more people to experience this glorious landscape.
Wild Meadow is Raynham's luxury glamping experience, and it really is unique.
Eight stunning, hand-crafted yurts are surrounded by a five-acre wildflower meadow, with uninterrupted views of the Wensum valley and the picturesque village church nestling below. Each yurt is positioned far enough apart to ensure privacy, but close enough to feel sociable should guests wish.
Designed to enable an escape from urban life, without compromising on home comforts. the accommodation boasts hand-crafted, super-king-sized beds with sumptuous mattresses and luxury bedding; wood-burning stoves and cosy blankets; mains electricity and charging points; plus, a private shower and loo for each yurt. And for those who prefer it, two of the yurts even have their own en-suite shower room.
“When fitting out the yurts, we anticipated what guests would expect and aimed to exceed that expectation. However, we avoided the temptation to 'over-design' as we know our interiors will always be secondary to the views of the park, farmland, and night-sky,” explains Tom Raynham
As well as individual barbecue facilities for each yurt, the shared Turnip Tent dining area and cooking tent - named after the Townshend family's farming heritage - provides plenty of space for a group to prepare and enjoy food together, with high-end appliances and utensils.
Each yurt is designated a fridge, storage cupboard, hob and all the cooking equipment needed, however ambitious the chef. Guests can pre-order estate reared Raynham Aberdeen Angus beef for the BBQ or enjoy a locally produced hamper of craft beer, wine, and food. They can also explore North Norfolk's plethora of food and shops in nearby villages and towns.
Acres of countryside yearn to be explored, with exceptional food and drink awaiting ramblers in need of refreshment. Set off on foot for a 3 ½ mile walk to Sculthorpe Mill, only one of two pubs in England to receive a new Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2022.
Abbie Panks, Head of Events and Marketing at Raynham Estate says: “We have added four more yurts this year, two of which are en-suite, all four with wider doors for easier wheelchair access and two are now dog-friendly. As well as individuals, couples, and families, we can now accommodate groups of up to around 40 people and have partnered with a range of nearby attractions, such as Pensthorpe Natural Park, Watatunga, WhataHoot and Duration Brewery to help our guests can make the most of their Norfolk stay.”
Wild Meadow is a traffic-free zone, ensuring a peaceful and safe environment for all guests and for wildlife, such as deer, rare birds of prey, owls, and butterflies. And meaning children can run free, den-making and bug-hunting under the shade of the estates woodland
When heading out to explore west and north Norfolk, guests can walk or cycle waymarked paths from the yurt meadow to woodland, parkland, and riverside areas. For those wishing to explore a little more of Norfolk, Raynham is only four miles from Fakenham and just a 20-minute drive to the North Norfolk coast, with its outstanding beaches including the award-winning Holkham beach and Wells-next-the-sea.
