P&O Australian Resorts

Heron Islands Junior Rangers - a program which actively involves children in the discovery of the Islands celebrated and precious Great Barrier Reef environment - has won a Highly Commended at this years British Airways Tourism For Tomorrow Awards held in London on 2 December 2003.

Positioned as a showcase of the worlds role models for responsible tourism, the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards began in 1989 and rewards excellence in the field of sustainable tourism development. Heron Islands Junior Ranger program - one of only two Australian nominations in the world-wide program - was recognised in the Environmental Experience category.

The Junior Ranger program is just one of many activities offered on Heron Island, where the focus is on guests exploring and appreciating the Islands unique coral cay and Great Barrier Reef environment, said Mark Campbell, Managing Director P&O Australian Resorts.

The Tourism for Tomorrow recognises organisations in the tourism industry that have made a positive contribution towards their local natural and cultural environment. P&O Australian Resorts is particularly proud that Heron Island and its environmental programs have been acknowledged in this regard.

Designed for Children 7 to 12 years of age, the Junior Ranger program includes a workbook and structured reef discovery activities. A one-off registration fee of $55 applies for each Junior Ranger participant with fees generating funds for the Queensland Turtle Conservation Program. Registration costs cover Junior Ranger activities, workbook, Junior Ranges cap and badges.

On completing each of the 15 program activities, including: reef walks; snorkeling adventures and working with marine biologists to turtle tag, children earn a badge and are closer to becoming an official Junior Ranger.

Heron Junior Ranger badges include: Reef Adventurer, Forest Awareness, Queensland Turtle Conservation Badge, Marine Helicopter Badge and Snorkel Badge. On completion of the series of activities, participants are eligible for the official Heron Kids Junior Ranger cap and badge.

The Heron Kids Junior Ranger programs were designed by Heron Islands Naturalists in co-operation with the University of Queensland Research Station and Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service.
