'Here's Looking at You, Kid': Six 'Starring' Reasons Millennials Should Know Humphrey Bogart

Florida Keys & Key West

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys — Virtually everyone who enjoys films knows the name, importance and legacy of actor Humphrey Bogart. Even people who aren't film buffs, or those regarded as “too young to appreciate black-and-white films,” are still at least subliminally aware of Bogart.

And as thousands of guests — millennials and gen Xer's included — flock to the Florida Keys each year, those who don't know a few Bogart tidbits risk missing out on some unique cultural and historical ties to the destination. So, ”Here's looking at you, kid” — and here's looking at one of the greats in American cinema.

1. No. 1 American Male Actor

The American Film Institute ranked Bogart number one out of 25 actors on the list of “American screen legends of all time.” Bogart gained this title in 1999 and beat out other film legends such as John Wayne, Cary Grant and Charlie Chaplin. 2. Second is the Best

In 1998 leaders from across the American film community gathered to select the 100 greatest American movies of all time. The 1942 film “Casablanca,” in which Bogart starred, placed second. While a 2008 listing rated “Casablanca” as the third best film of all time, that's still excellent for a film made long before computers. 3. Third Annual Humphrey Bogart Film Festival

The third annual Key Largo–based Humphrey Bogart Film Festival is set for Oct. 21-25 — an entire festival dedicated to Bogart and the film noir genre. With events including a student film festival and discussions led by well-known film industry figures such as Billy Corben, the director of “Cocaine Cowboys,” the gathering spotlights the future of film as well as its past. 4. Four Wives

Bogart married four times and his fourth marriage to Lauren Bacall carried him through the last years of his life. A well-known actress in her own right, Bacall co-starred with Bogart in four movies including “Key Largo” and “The Big Sleep.“ The famous pair had two children together and their son, Stephen Bogart, hosts the Humphrey Bogart Film Festival. Bacall's legacy is to be examined alongside her husband's during the 2015 festival.

5. Five “Top 100 Film Quotes”

Bogart also dominated another legendary list from the American Film Institute — one ranking the most significant movie quotes of all time. Bogart uttered five of them, more than any other actor or actress. No matter one's age, these quotes are recognizable.

  • 5. "Here's looking at you, kid." — As Rick Blaine in “Casablanca”
  • 14. "The stuff that dreams are made of." — As Sam Spade in “The Maltese Falcon”
  • 20. "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." — As Rick Blaine in “Casablanca”
  • 43. "We'll always have Paris.” — As Rick Blaine in “Casablanca”
  • 67. "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." — As Rick Blaine in “Casablanca”

6. Six People Cruise into History

Key Largo visitors can cruise into history aboard the African Queen, the actual boat used in the 1951 movie, “The African Queen,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. After being rediscovered in the 1970s in Cairo, Egypt, with coal still in its bilges, it was purchased and shipped to the United States. Refurbished in 2012, it currently operates as a six-passenger excursion vessel offering canal and dinner cruises around Key Largo. The iconic boat is also on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Visit www.africanqueenflkeys.com.
