Helping Combat The World Water Crisis Its Time To Pump Water For A Kenyan Community In Need

Governors’ Camp

This Sunday 22nd March is World Water Day drawing attention to the plight of 1.1 billion people worldwide who lack access to clean, safe drinking water. This global problem is estimated to kill almost 4,500 children per day.

In the world famous Masai Mara a team comprising UK registered charity, the Mara Rianda Charitable Trust, safari operator Governors Camp, UK tour operator Audley Travel, Prestige Promotions Ltd and Oundle School, Northamptonshire in the UK have come together to deliver clean water to Aitong Primary School located on the edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The school lacks a sufficient supply of clean water and currently its water comes from a very unhygienic muddy pool.

Thanks to the teams effort, the project underway involves tapping a nearby spring, installing a solar water pump, pipes and storage tanks at the primary school which are urgently needed. Just one hour drive away from Governors Camp, guests staying at the safari camp will get the opportunity to see first hand the good work being done and the huge benefits this brings the local community.

We are proud of our long term record in helping our community neighbours with essential development projects. Together with Mara Rianda Charitable Trust and our other partners we are making a noticeable difference to peoples lives on the ground. We hope that children benefiting from these projects will leave school with a very real sense of the benefits they have received from tourism and that this younger generation will work as hard as their parents have done to preserve and enhance this unique wilderness area. Dominic Grammaticas, Director of Governors Camp.

Managing all the logistics on the ground, providing transport and offering 100% commitment to this project, Governors Camp are proud to share the news of their recent responsible project which is set to make a massive difference to the children in Aitong. Work has already started to improve the childrens future and the team is now tapping the spring to provide permanent instant freshwater for the children.

We are delighted to be working with Governors Camp at Aitong School having first visited the school last year; we are taking 20 pupils back to work at Aitong in October 2009. We have helped to install water systems in other schools in Kenyas Rift Valley and have seen the huge difference it can make in just a couple of years. Ian Clark, History Teacher and trip organiser at Oundle School.

This work is the latest in a number of projects jointly undertaken by Mara Rianda Chartiable Trust and Governors Camp. Just 3 years ago the two partners installed a borehole at another nearby school, Mara Rianda Primary School which has helped raise attendance at the school by reducing water borne diseases.
