Aquarium at Ocean Park 30 Mar 2011
Have You Ever Seen the Fury of a Shark Feeding up Close?

Ocean Park, Shark Bay

One of Western Australia's most exciting eco-tourism attractions, Ocean Park Aquarium in Shark Bay is a must-see for all visitors to the pristine Shark Bay World Heritage Marine Park and those travelling through this incredible region.

Ocean Park is ideally located on the coastline of the Shark Bay World Heritage Marine Park. The park is renowned for its incredible diversity and is home to sea turtles, dolphins, whales, dugongs, a variety small marine life and sea grasses.

It is situated 8km south of Denham and approximately 30km from Monkey Mia on Shark Bay Road.

Ocean Park manager and co-owner Mr Edmund Fenny said Ocean Park offers the opportunity to interact and explore the mysteries of the deep in a safe, secure and fun environment.

“Visitors can view the beauty of colourful sea creatures inside one of Ocean Park’s open water aquariums, witness nature’s fury during shark feeding sessions or relax with a glass of wine as they watch the sun set over crystal clear waters,” Mr Fenny said.

People looking for a more adventurous way to explore the natural terrain can take a National Park four-wheel drive tour that includes meals, Ocean Park and National Park entry fees, snorkelling opportunities and the opportunity to see the ‘Big 5’ – dugongs, sharks, turtles, dolphins and rays.

The full day tours to either Francois Peron National Park or to Steep Point are lead by some of Ocean Park’s marine scientist staff.

Mr Fenny said Ocean Park is proudly eco-friendly and utilises innovative design and the latest in technology to maintain its facilities and aquariums.

“The park is powered by one of WA’s largest private solar technology systems, which generates 273 kilowatt hours of electricity per day, enough to power 20 suburban homes” he said.

Other ecologically sustainable initiatives at Ocean Park include:

* Desalination of seawater through a reverse osmosis unit powered by the solar system.

* Collection and storage of rainwater to augment the desalinated water.

* Use of a windmill to prime pumps and also act as a giant vacuum cleaner of display ponds.

* Use of energy efficient fridges and freezers that consume 65% less power than conventional units.

* Technologically efficient pumps and filters that reduce energy use.

“I am passionate about the ecology in Shark Bay and enjoy being able to entertain and educate people about this special world heritage area,” Mr Fenny said.
