London 13 December 2016 - Following much anticipation, Saturday 10 December saw the Grand Opening Party of Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife as it officially launched in the Canary Islands. Bringing the spirit of the 80s to Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife's open-air stage located next to a new stunning freshwater lagoon, the glam Grand Opening Party injected a dose of glitter, fluorescent colour, and disco classics to Tenerife's coastline in celebration of Europe's second Hard Rock Hotel.
A ten second countdown at sunset marked the start of the party as familiar faces from Hard Rock International and Palladium Hotel Group, Hard Rock's hotel partner in Tenerife, were introduced to the stage for the legendary 'guitar smash'. Following tradition with the launch of all Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos around the world, key figures in the development of the property, including Abel Matutes Juan, President of Grupo Empresas Matutes, his son Abel Matutes Prats, CEO of Palladium Hotel Group, Jon Lucas, EVP Hotel & Casino Operations at Hard Rock International, Alberto Bernabé and Carlos Alonso from the Tenerife government, and Ermitas Moreira from the Adeje city council smashed a guitar on stage to pay homage to the authentic rock rebels behind the Hard Rock brand.
Guests came from all over the island and the world to party at the Canary Islands' newest entertainment venue and included the well-known Spanish actress and fashion icon Paula Echevarria. Party goers got into the spirit with mullets, shoulder pads and big hair styles to reflect the eighties era, while others came dressed up as their favourite eighties icons, including Madonna, Boy George and Freddie Mercury.
'Children of the '80s' DJ trio Dream Team Reload got the musical proceedings underway, warming up the crowd with dance-floor fillers and sing-a-long classics. African artist Rozalla made history at 7pm as the first artist to play the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife stage, entertaining the audience with her distinct soulful voice. For her finale, she got the crowd singing along and jumping around to her dance classic, 'Everybody's Free'. Next up, Freedom Williams from American dance-pop and hip-hop group C+C Music Factory kept the energy high with hits such as 'Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)' and 'Things That Make You Go Hmmmm'. Italian trio Blackbox followed with more eighties house music vibes and left the lagoon-side concert area rocking with their 1989 best-selling record 'Ride on Time'.
The kings of disco, Village People, completed the one of a kind, 80s style extravaganza with their scores of catchy classics. The six-strong disco group were dressed in their distinctive costumes and entertained with their signature dance moves, taking it in turns to introduce themselves to the revellers before them. Popular tracks 'Macho Man', 'In The Navy' and 'Y.M.C.A' all featured within their set.
Dream Team Reload returned to the stage in between sets to keep the crowds dancing to eighties and nineties tunes, accompanied by fluorescent Lycra-clad go-go dancers performing on the stage and on oversized rubix cubes around the open-air concert area. These combined with world-class pyrotechnics, air jets, streamers, confetti and coloured lighting alongside the premium 80s musical line up to create an explosive party atmosphere.
The Grand Opening wrapped up at 11pm with a spectacular firework display that lit up the southern Tenerife coastline of Playa Paraiso.
The launch of 'Children of the 80s' in Tenerife comes after two successful seasons at Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza. Now notorious for its fun filled, blast-from-the-past vibes reminiscent of a time when music defined everything, the Grand Opening Party marked not only the inauguration of the new five star property, but also Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife's energising event programme of live concerts, which will include a monthly 'Children of the 80s' party.
