CLIVE TULLY
TRANSATLANTIC HAT TRICK
The latter part of August sees Clive Tully on his third Transatlantic. The first (2001) set the official world record for a powerboat crossing from New York to Lizard Point - which remains unbroken. The second (2003) set the unofficial record for the fastest Atlantic crossing by Rigid Inflatable Boat.
This time round it's a rather more comfortable two-week cruise with Voyages of Discovery from Newfoundland to Harwich via Greenland, Iceland and the Faroes - sort of retracing the steps of his 2003 crossing in the Spirit of Cardiff, and performing a number of onboard lecture engagements. Clive will be sharing the speaking lineup with Sir Bernard Ingham (former press secretary to Margaret Thatcher) and actress Jean Alexander ("Coronation Street's" Hilda Ogden, now appearing in "Last of the Summer Wine").

GUILD NEWS
2006 CALENDAR Last year, the Guild produced its first calendar to great acclaim. We are now urgently seeking additional sponsorship to allow us to produce the second. We are offering months at 1000 each, including 100 free calendars. The theme is Way to Go ideal for tour and transport operators with all photos taken by Guild members. Copies are widely circulated to all major travel publications in the UK and many around the world, as well as to Guild members, trade and PR contacts. If anyone is interested in further details, please contact Melissa Shales urgently. We need to make the decision on whether to publish by the early September or it will be too late. Contact tel: 020-8674 7406, mobile: 07798-745473, email: m.shales@virgin.net.
GUILD AWARDS DINNER
Work is now well underway on planning the 2005 BGTW Awards Dinner, to be held at the Savoy Hotel, on 13 November (the Sunday before World Travel Market). If anyone hasnt yet ordered their tickets, they are advised to contact the Guild Secretariat, Charlotte Copeman, on 020 8749 1128, email: charlotte.c@virtualnecessities.com, as soon as possible.
THE YEARBOOK 2006
Production of the 2006 Yearbook is now underway. If you want travel journalists to find you, please read these notices carefully.
Yearbook Advertising You know it works - that travel article or TV clip that leads to a surge in phone calls, email enquiriesand bookings. The travel writers, editors, programme makers and journalists who make this happen are on the lookout for whats new. A sure way to spark their interest in your plans for 2006 is by placing an advertisement in the British Guild of Travel Writers Yearbook.
The cost of publicising your organisation for twelve months in the 2006 Yearbook starts from 200 for an advertisement, and as little as 85 for a logo. And even better, many colour advertisement rates have been reduced for the new edition.
Its worth investigating. Give Maggie McPhee a call on 020 7586 2162 or email her at Maggie@maggiemcphee.com.
The Travel Industry Database New entries The BGTW Yearbook and online Travel Industry Database now have over 2,500 crucial travel industry contacts, as well as biographical details of our 220 members. If you are not yet listed, but would like to be included, we would be happy to list your company name, address, public and PR contact details, including the name of the in-house PR person and your PR agency. If you are a PR agency, please send full contact details for all your new clients. Please send the details to Charlotte Copeman, email: charlotte.c@virtualnecessities.com, marking the title bar TID ENTRY.
Listings Updates Advance Warning If you are already listed in the Yearbook and on the website, you will be receiving an email link within the next two months. If you follow this through, it will take you directly to an updateable version of your entry and you can make any changes you need and be absolutely sure that your details are correct. Once the email does arrive, please make sure that you remember to update your entry as soon as possible. It is in all our interests to make sure that we can find you when we need you and it saves the Guild considerable sums of money if we dont have to chase you by phone. Thank you. Extended Entries The web version of the listings - the Travel Industry Database - is constantly updated all year. It is also fully searchable and for only 25 + VAT per listing (payable online by credit card), you can extend your entry to include a logo, brochure shot or photos, text about your product/client, hot links to the account handlers and your own website and, perhaps most importantly of all, key words that will ensure that we can always find you when we need information. Simply log onto www.bgtw.org hit the button that says TID and follow the instructions.

WEB NOTICE-BOARD
The members-only section of the BGTW website has a noticeboard on which we post various things of interest/use to Guild members. This does not include general press releases, but it does include press trip notification, news about awards and jobs. From time to time PR companies & tourist offices send us details of forthcoming press trips for which commissioned journalists are invited to apply, and we are happy to pass them on to the membership. We will also happily advertise any jobs you have on offer, whether a one-off feature or full-time employment. Please send the details by email to our webmaster, Alastair McKenzie (alastair@travel-lists.co.uk).
If you would like us to send out press releases on your behalf, either via email or on hard copy, we do make a small charge to cover our admin costs. Please ask for details from the Secretariat, tel: 020-8749 1128; email: charlotte.c@virtualnecessities.com
COLLISION CALENDAR Are you making maximum use of the Collision Calendar on the BGTWs website? It's a good way to check that your client's next launch won't be competing for media attention with another travel event on the same day. All you have to do is login to the BGTW website (www.bgtw.org), go to the calendar page and view what's there and/or enter your own function. Alternatively, send details of any event you wish to list to our webmaster, Alastair McKenzie (alastair@travel-lists.co.uk). Most PRs want to be selective about invitations. When placing an event on the calendar you don't have to invite the whole guild! You can always say something like "By invitation only" or "Guest list full - no more space, sorry!".
The calendar serves two functions: it is there to let BGTW members know about events in the pipeline in which they might have an interest, and to be a useful collision avoidance tool for PRs.
