From 1 October to 11 November, Guernsey will hold its 17th annual Tennerfest, which will see over 180 restaurants in Guernsey and its sister island Sark offer all inclusive menus starting from £10, with savings of almost 50% on normal prices. This gives the islands' restaurants the chance to promote their quality gastronomic product and local specialities for fantastic value prices. Menus and further details are available at www.tennerfest.com.
Tennerfest is Guernsey's most popular foodie event with an estimated five million Tennerfest meals consumed since the events inception in 1998. In 2013 alone, Tennerfest saw a record number of 190 participating restaurants, with 78% hosting in excess of 500 covers. Tennerfest will be stepping it up a notch this year with a special Tennerfest ale and newly opened restaurants participating including the beachfront Roc Salt restaurant (www.rocsalt.gg).
All Tennerfest participants offer innovative menus focusing on local produce, freshly caught fish and Guernsey specialties such as Guernsey Gâche, a fruit loaf often served with Guernsey butter; the traditional 'bean jar', a one pot meal cooked overnight and made of beans, pork belly and onions; Gâche Méléé, which is similar to an apple cake; crab patties, Guernsey cheese and locally brewed beer.
An example of a two course £10 menu is cod, king prawn and Guernsey crab gratin with mixed Guernsey leaves and potted cheddar, quince and toasted Guernsey Gâche for dessert. An example three course menu for £15 is cod and caper fishcake for starter, a Guernsey bean jar for the main course and bramley apple and pear cobbler for dessert.
Tennerfest started in 1998 as a way of attracting visitors during the traditionally quieter shoulder season but today it is the most important event of the year for restaurant owners in the Channel Islands and helps to bridge the gap between the busy summer season and Christmas. With inflation, the 'tenner' of 17 years ago means that menus start at £10 but there are also fixed price menus at £12.50, £15, £17.50 and £20.
