With the stadium at full capacity and a big screen monitor blaring at a sea of die hard Samsung Lions' fans, Guam's Cultural dancers and musicians put on what can be considered the biggest performance of their lives.
In front of packed crowds during the first three games of the Korean Professional Baseball season in Daegu, Korea, Guam stepped up to the plate to display it's rich cultural uniqueness, which can only be found on the tropical island located 4 hours from Korea by airplane. The Guam team, who had recently completed a trip to Korea, was fortunate to have been invited by the Samsung Lions while the team was on Guam conducting their annual winter season training at the Leo Palace Resort facility in January 2007.
With crowds estimated at over 100,000 over three days, including the season opening game on April 7th, images of Guam flashed brightly on the big screen highlighting the island as an ideal destination with wonderful year round tropical weather for those who want to escape the brutal Korean winters to bask in the sun or play in the sand.
Miss Guam Tourism Jessica Ignacio, who was invited to hit the first pitch thrown by Seung-Eun Oh, a famous Korean female star, was also on hand to greet crowds and thank Samsung Lions Fans for their teams' support of Guam. Ignacio said that the trip was great and wanted to thank the Guam Visitors Bureau for finding avenues which save money but maximize exposure value through relationships with organizations such as Samsung. It was great; we went over there and did what we had to do and with all the exposure and live television broadcasts, you just can't beat it, Ignacio said.
Before the start of each game, the Guam team provided photo opportunities for hundreds of fans lead by Miss Guam Tourism and the Samsung Lions' mascots. Already, the Samsung Lions Head Coach confirmed they would return to Guam early next year for their fourth consecutive spring training on Guam. GVB Board Director and Chairman of the Korea Marketing Committee Mr. Richard K. Lai led the Guam delegation. He said he will continue to seek out professional teams who look for warmer climates such as Guam to maximize training when their own climates are extremely unbearable for professional athletes who run the risk of injury associated with colder temperatures. At each event, brochures and information about Guam were shared with thousands. We acknowledge the Samsung Lions for their support of Guam and in return the GVB extends its best wishes for another successful season, said Lai. While in Daegu, the Guam delegation also performed at busy street sidewalks outside the Daegu Department store. The group also provided performances in Seoul in front of crowds at the Jamsil Lotte, Myeong-dong Lotte and the Nowon Lotte Department Stores. Coconut leaf weaving demonstrations and cha-cha dancing were some of the activities the crowds were invited to participate in. ###
