Growth For UK Snowsports Industry

Ski Club of Great Britain

The total UK snowsports market has grown by 1.3% according to the Ski Club of Great Britains 2004 Snowsports Analysis an independent report on the UK snowsports market.

The total snowsports market is now estimated at 1,205,000 following a good snow season and in spite of continued political and economic uncertainty. This year-on-year increase means the total snowsports market has grown by 8.5% since the 2000/2001 season.

- The independent travel market saw a growth of 3.7% with the increased use of no-frills airlines and the internet, and it is now estimated at 244,000 passengers, 20% of the overall snowsports market.

- The tour operator market also saw growth of 0.7% year on year, despite consolidation by some UK tour operators. The tour operator market is now estimated at 961,000 passengers, 80% of the overall snowsports market.

- The use of the internet and email for booking snowsports holidays has increased, as has the use of specialist ski agencies. High street agencies have seen a decline in their use for booking snowsports holidays.

- Air travel and the use of the ski train to travel to resorts both increased, with self-drive decreasing its market share.

- France remains dominant in its share of the UK snowsports market with Austria and Italy lying in second place. The Snowsports Analysis also lists the top resorts in France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, USA and Canada.

- The report also comments on the strength of the UK snowsports scene and looks to the future with a consideration of the environment and how riders can act responsibly on the mountain.

- The annual report was compiled using data from questionnaires sent to UK tour operators, resorts, travel agencies and transport companies during the 2003/2004 season, alongside data from other industry reports.

The Ski Club of Great Britain is the UKs largest snowsports membership organisation, promoting snowsports to all and dedicated to offering skiing and boarding opportunities, information and events. The Ski Club enjoys a positive relationship with all sectors of the industry both nationally and internationally.
