Tags: Sao Tome & Principe Group Tour
The second smallest African nation, Sao Tome & Principe is a little know destination in the Gulf of Guinea consisting of two main islands. Sao Tome contains most of the population, while smaller Princpe is wild and untamed. The islands once supplied the majority of the world's cacoa, and in 1919, British astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington proved Einstein's Theory of Relativity during a solar eclipse at one of the rocas (plantaion houses) where the group will stay.
In 2012 Principe was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, due to a high degree of endemicism in its insects, birds, bats and reptiles, and is a hotspot for marine creatures such as turtles. Sao Tome has baobab savannah and rainforest, as well as the main town with its gently decaying Portuguese colonial buildings and lively street markets.
Reef & Rainforest has a 15-day small group tour led by Kathleen Becker, the Bradt guide author, departing on 31 November 2023, delving into areas even the locals don't know exist. Price is £5368 per person sharing, plus flights and first night in Lisbon.
Accommodation will be in a mixture of converted colonial plantation houses, beach resorts and small hotels. Expect to see turtles laying eggs, flocks of African Grey parrots and troops of monkeys playing in the lush tropical rainforest. Visit Rolas Island, right on the Equator, and enjoy a 15-course tasting menu prepared by the chef owner of Roca Sao Joao.
With a minimum of six and maximum of ten participants, the group will never feel crowded.
Bubbling with enthusiasm and charm, Kathleen is an experienced and knowledgeable tour leader who knows how to keep everyone interested and involved.
