Green with Desire: Can We Live Sustainably in Our Homes? Chicago Architecture Foundation Opens New Exhibition June 24

Chicago Architecture Foundation

Chicago -- In a city with a strong commitment to being green, the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) offers a new exhibition, Green with Desire: Can We Live Sustainably in Our Homes? Open from June 24 through September 5 at 224 S. Michigan Avenue, this free exhibition explores how homes determine the quality of our livesand the health of the planet.

Green with Desire challenges myths about sustainable living. It goes far beyond the offering of simple solutions. We are inundated with greenwashthe marketing of products that claim to protect the environment, said Gregory Dreicer, Vice President of Exhibitions and Programs. We are offering a unique experience that encourages people to think about how we might live green in homes not designed for sustainable living---which is what we inhabit.

Visitors to the exhibition will find a giant, dazzlingly green installation that evokes household scenes. It willl consider the environmental impact of daily activities like refrigerating food and taking a shower. Green with Desire guides visitors to question their behavior: Can I buy my way out of global warming? What are the consequences of continuing a lifestyle based on lavish consumption of water and fuel? How can I reduce waste?

The exhibition presents case studies of typical housing types of northern Illinois, from public housing to bungalows; from suburban ranch houses to luxury high rise buildings. The exhibition addresses the big questions about how we live, while providing information about strategies for conserving energy. Visitors are urged to discuss the issues that address climate change and other urgent challenges facing the environment.

Green with Desire is the first exhibition in the three-part Home Series, which explores the construction of home as a place and an idea.

Throughout the summer, CAF will host Green with Desire panel discussions, tours, afternoon and evening lectures. Program topics and schedules are at www.architecture.org.
