Nature and history come alive on the Great Ocean Walk's (GOW) new Audio App. A collection of 68 stories in multiple languages, spanning the eight incredible days of the walk, is now available.
Located in Victoria's famous Great Ocean Road region, the Great Ocean Walk is one of Walk Victoria's Icons hero long distance walks. Travelling more than 100km the Walk starts in Apollo Bay and ends at the iconic Twelve Apostles taking eight days in full.
The new Great Ocean Walk Audio App has been developed by Parks Victoria with the expertise of the multi-award winning tour app developer ITours Australia.
The Audio App stories are told in four languages; 68 stories are recorded in English and German and then selected tracks in Korean and Japanese. They are suitable for all smartphone applications and can be used for pre, post and on-walk use.
Stories are designed to enhance the walking experience - bringing this iconic section of Victoria's rugged coastline alive – where nature's drama unfolds at every step.
Parks Victoria's West Coast District Manager Dale Antonysen said that the Great Ocean Walk App also provides important planning and preparation information for each day.
Mr Antonysen said that “By having several languages versions we are reaching out to visitors and potential hikers, from near and far, and connecting them to the history, flora and fauna of this international renowned coastline.
Storytelling of the Great Ocean Road region's history and the unique sounds of the Australian bush add another layer of interpretation and immersion for the walker.
“Indigenous Australians have walked it's coastline for millennia and more recently new pathways carry visitors on the Great Ocean Walk. A walk through times of change; following old logging tracks, passing beneath the Cape Otway Lighthouse reminding us of the coasts shipwreck history and over old bridges remnants of an earlier, harder life etched out before the Great Ocean Road was built”.
The App also encourages repeat visits for specialist visitors with particular interest – such as birdwatchers, historians and outdoor enthusiasts generally.
The app will be downloadable for free on the Apple iTunes store or via mp3 on www.greatoceanwalk.com.au.
