PEACH SPRINGS, Ariz. – May 20, 2015 – Grand Canyon West is making final preparations to open its new visitor's center at the Grand Canyon Skywalk this July. For the first phase of the Grand Canyon Skywalk facility expansion project, the first floor of the building has been transformed as a main hub for those wishing to walk 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor. This first floor will feature a gift shop, dining, and a beautiful view of the natural surroundings.
“While only the first phase, this is a huge milestone for the Grand Canyon West and the Skywalk,” said GCRC Marketing Manager Kurtis Shaul. “The opening of the center will not only ease logistical procedures for our guests and staff, but will also make the Skywalk visit an even better experience.”
Opening to the public in 2007, the Grand Canyon Skywalk is a glass, horseshoe-shaped bridge extending guests 70 feet past the canyon edge. The bridge is 10 feet wide, with side glass walls about 5 feet tall. The bridge is strong enough to support 71 million pounds, or the equivalent of 71 fully loaded 747 airplanes. Overall, the structure has more than one million pounds of steel, 83,000 pounds of glass, and weighs 1.2 million pounds in total.
Details on promotions and events related to the opening will be announced at a late summer 2015. For more information about Grand Canyon West or the Grand Canyon Skywalk, please call (888) 868-9378 or visit online at grandcanyonwest.com.
