Golden, BC: Kicking Horse Country has a reputation for extreme mountain biking but Golden, BC is not just for hard-core downhill riders! Excellent road biking routes and family-friendly trails are all part of the appeal of this authentic working town. Of course, the reputation for first-class mountain biking is well deserved as Golden will host some of North America's premier races this summer.

For road riders, the Golden Triangle - with its three vertices in Banff National Park, Radium Hot Springs, BC, and Golden, BC - appears on many a bucket list. A legendary and scenic trip, this challenging highway loop bisects three national parks: Banff, Yoho and Kootenay. The spirit-raising circuit is over 300 km long and cuts across a large section of the Rocky Mountains. Golden has great lodging options for those embarking on this incredible experience.

For families, the scenic Rotary Trails in Golden are ideal for sightseeing and exploring. This gentle loop runs along the turquoise Kicking Horse River to the confluence with the Columbia River. Families can stop along the way to cross the longest freestanding timber bridge into Golden's Main Street or get ice cream on the way to Golden's outdoor pool and spray park – bound to be a kid's favorite stop. The skate park and pump track are also accessible from the trail – for those who wish to hone their mountain biking and BMX skills.

The new Mountain Shadows trails at the base of Kicking Horse Mountain now give Golden over 100km of cross-country trails with three trail systems that can be connected as a single ride and are easily accessible from downtown.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort boasts the highest bike park in North America and this year has added a new pump track, located in the base area. The park will open for the season on June 28, 2014. Accessible via gondola, 26 trails showcase alpine single track, rock slabs and technical stunts with twisty single-track, plunging downhills and novice descents.

Golden is known as a mountain biking destination for good reason, with a number of races scheduled for this summer:

• The BC Enduro Kootenay Rockies Series on July 19 and 20 welcomes competitors with three timed stages over two days, stopping in Crystal Bowl at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.
• The Kicking Horse Cup, on July 19 and 20 is composed of an 8.5 km individual time trial, a 13.4 km hill climb and an 82 km road race – all taking place around Golden and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.
• At the Western Open Downhill Cup from July 25 – 27, Kicking Horse Mountain hosts the fastest downhill racers from Western Canada as they compete for cash and prizes.
• SingleTrack6: Ride the West on July 26-31 is an exciting, new six-stage mountain bike adventure with a perfect brew of cross-country, panoramic vistas and enduro descents. Golden will host two of the six stops, July 29 and 30, in this race that showcases the best riding in a variety of authentic mountain bike communities in Western Canada.

Whether you are a crankhead, a roadie, a leisure rider, or simply a spectator, Golden welcomes all with small-town charm and world-class scenery.
