Get ready to explore a countryside full of contrasts this winter. Hat and gloves? Check. Walking boots? Double check. Prepare to be blown away by the picturesque Tyne Valley in Northumberland.
By day, take a brisk walk around Steel Rigg and Crag Lough.
Following the Hadrian's Wall Path, meander up the undulating slopes of Steel Rigg. One of the most iconic features in the Northumbrian landscape, this magnificent cliff face shows how the Romans incorporated this natural phenomenon to maximise the strength of the Emperor Hadrian's frontier.
On top of the crag, pause for breath at the Cawfields Milecastle and marvel in possibly the most impressive views of the Tyne Valley – just like the Roman soldiers would have done.
Continue west to the iconic Sycamore Gap – known for appearing in the Kevin Costner film 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves'.
Double back on yourself with a circular route around Crag Lough lake at the foot of the crag face. This presents the imposing view any marauding barbarians would have had 2000 years ago, but is now a scenic spot to end explorations.
Refuel with a flask of hot tea and local goodies you picked up at some of the amazing eateries in the Tyne Valley, such as Vallum Farm and Brocksbushes Farm Shop.
By night, Northumberland is just as good with the lights off.
It's said that 85% of the population haven't experienced the miracles of a truly dark sky, yet this is regular experienced in Northumberland.
Don't think that you are 'into stargazing'? Visit the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park and you'll be sure to think again! Looking up and seeing hundreds of stars and the Milky Way clearly overhead is a truly breath-taking experience you will never forget.
You don't need an expensive telescope to enjoy Northumberland's night skies, just wrap up warm, pack a pair of binoculars, a hot drink and bite to eat and head off to enjoy a star-studded show. Alternatively, try a Dark Sky Stay and Gaze accommodation such as Battlesteads in the North Tyne Valley. The astronomers at their new observatory will tell you everything you need to know about constellations, the universe and more!
Day or night, Northumberland has so much to offer.
