Luxury hotel and resort management company GHM is venturing into sports sponsorship for the first time as main patron of iconic Swiss ice hockey club EHC Arosa.
The team is legendary for winning seven Swiss championships in the 1950s, and two in the early 1980s, before slipping into the country's top amateur division. But plans are afoot to revive EHC Arosa's fortunes with a new stadium, and GHM is backing the comeback as sponsor for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
GHM is more renowned for conceiving, developing and operating bespoke hotels and resorts worldwide than sports but Hans R. Jenni, Director and President for GHM said: "The club's image and the world famous resort destination of Arosa are a perfect fit for the GHM brand."
EHC Arosa is famed for the extraordinary loyalty of its long-supporting fans and it is no coincidence that Mr Jenni is one of them.
Whether the fabled club reaches its five-year goal of returning to professional glory or not, Mr Jenni added: "We intend to make a lasting commitment to EHC Arosa, whatever the club's ranking over the next few years. Of course, GHM hopes that the club will successfully return to the National League, but this will have no bearing on our future commitment."
As EHC Arosa redevelops its historic Oversee Stadium, construction is also underway on GHM's first luxury resort in Switzerland.
The Chedi Andermatt is scheduled for opening in 2013. It is one of eight new GHM hotels and resorts currently under development, joining 11 existing 'bespoke' properties in the group's stable.
