All Together Now
The warm weather is driving North Dakotans out of doors in droves, so get in on the fun. McQuades Softball Tournament, the world's largest, gets underway in Bismarck with more than 400 men's and women's teams playing to support local charities. Bait your hook and join anglers at either the Devils Lake 40th Annual Walleye Tournament, Jamestown's Dakota Anglers Little Britches Fishing Tournament or at Wahpeton's Dick Bell Catfish Tournament. Curious about classic cars? Learn from the enthusiasts at Mandan's Buggies-N-Blues, Valley City's Rally in the Valley and Devils Lake's Devils Run. If classic cult films like “Back to the Future” are more your thing, grab a blanket and get cozy under the stars for the Starlight Cinema series at Sleepy Hollow Arts Park in Bismarck.
Seeking Solitude
If you are seeking tranquility you can find it in one of North Dakota's 13 state parks or in its most prized gem, Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The Visitor Center at the south entrance of TRNP loans binoculars to visitors so pick a hike and get acquainted with the splendor of this national treasure. Explore Fort Stevenson State Park near Garrison, N.D. with ideal access to Lake Sakakawea, widely known as the “walleye capital of North Dakota.” Sully Creek State Park near Medora, N.D. is a prime entrance to the spectacular 144-mile Maah Daah Hey Trail. The trail is a favorite of hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders because of its breath-taking views of the rugged Badlands and the Little Missouri River. Rent a kayak or canoe and trace the route of Lewis and Clark on the Missouri River, although we recommend doing it in reverse … traveling down-river is much easier!
Food and Art Fun
Summer is festival time and there's no shortage of celebrations across North Dakota. Sample the delicious fare and enjoy live entertainment, including Uncle Kracker and Blind Melon, at Ribfest in Fargo. Rockin' Rib Fest in Williston invites you to spend the afternoon taste-testing some of the best barbecue ribs around. Grand Forks' Grand Cities Art Fest features artisans, food vendors and live entertainment on the banks of the Red River for two full days of fun. The beloved Medora Musical gets underway this month so check out the foot-stompin' fun and enjoy pitchfork fondue while you're there.
