Get out There #TryThis
June is for Getting Out There! How about running? If the women athletes out there missed Moab's infamous Thelma & Louise half marathon in June, do not feel downcast. All runners can join a running trail adventure with 360 Moab Adventures. #TryThis in Moab http://grassrootsevents.net/360-moab-adventures/
Get a Tee time to get out there. At the Moab Golf Course rental club sets are currently $8 and carts are included with the $48 rate. The course is a verdant 18 holes nestled against the classic red stone of the desert southwest. There is also a driving range to work on your swing or just stretch those golf muscles while on vacation. Lessons are available with advance arrangements. http://www.moabcountryclub.com/
At the Matheson Wetlands tote along binoculars to enjoy the bird sanctuary. Or find Moab's additionally preferable sites upon http://www.discovermoab.com/birding.htm. Should a checklist be desired, print this list https://www.utahbirds.org/counties/grand/ChklstMathesonPreserve.htm and bring it along with a favorite field guide. Know that Back of Beyond Books store along Moab's Main Street has a supplement of regional field guides too. Love birding? Moab annually participates in the Audubon Christmas Bird Count in December should there be an inkling to return to join the local bird club in this endeavor.
With the warm, sunny days of June, give a paddle board a whirl. Many companies either rent boards or lead stand up paddle boarding. Find those businesses on http://www.discovermoab.com/tours.htm Hint for beginners: request a breakdown kayak paddle, just in case winds perk up to better pull this otherwise fleet craft downstream.
The beach, yes in Moab (but not with little kids). Go to Big Sandy Beach out along Hwy 128 about 10.6 miles from intersection of Hwy 128 with Hwy 191. Big Sandy Beach is a great spot for basking on the sand. There is a pit toilet for human waste cleanliness. Important! Pack out all other trash. Broken glass would spoil this spot. Do not bring glass. Do bring Personal Flotation Devices for dipping into the river. It looks benign. Don't take any chances with the river current. http://www.blm.gov/style/medialib/blm/ut/moab_fo/maps/0.Par.30889.File.dat/MoabDailyMap.pdf
The beach with kids is at Ken's Lake about 8 miles south of Moab's downtown center. Watch for the sign on south Hwy 191 to turn off onto (old) Airport Road. Turn south and notice an earthen berm holding back this reservoir. A pea gravel beach has a gentle slope into the lake at fuller water levels. A pit toilet and dumpster is located at Ken's Lake. Do not bring glass containers.
Another water idea for kids? #TryThis -- Lions Park has a meandering water trail for the kids to enjoy. This feature is a hop, skip and jump away from the newly installed Boulder Park. Adults can lounge on the nearby grass or under the shelter of the group picnic tables and monitor both play spots. Lions Park is at the intersection of Hwy 128 and Hwy 191. Flushing toilets, drinking water, trash receptacle, and picnic facilities are available at Lions Park.
Have a terrific time when you Get Out There, wherever that may be, be safe.
