With cheaper air travel the norm and social media taking us to every corner of the world, it can sometimes be difficult to uncover escapes and expeditions that still have a wow factor. But with another decade just about to kick off, and travellers drawing up lists of their new year's resolutions, it's more important than ever to find destinations and adventures that challenge comfort zones.
“The idea was to find experiences that make people think, 'I never knew you could do that,'” says publisher Justin Jamieson of issue 63's special feature. “It's true that most of them require a certain dedication to planning and a decent chunk of time to make it happen, but the rewards are far beyond what you'd experience on an average trip.
“The best part of most of the adventures we've included is that you'll either be travelling with a very small group or independently to places where you're unlikely to see too many other tourists. There's a tall ship adventure to Cape Verde, cycling along the Taiwanese coastline and a snowcat–truck camper combo that takes you deep onto the Pemberton ice cap in Canada, plus a lot more.”
Elsewhere in the issue, we trek into the highlands of Papua New Guinea, dive into icy waters off Scotland's Outer Hebrides, go on a cruise that takes you to orangutan central, and spend the entire night finding the best nightlife in Auckland. There's the chance to go searching for bears in Finland, explore a tiny island off Western Australia and feel the beat at a music festival in the Okavango Delta. Plus, we'll meet some of the nomadic people of Mongolia, wander the streets of a cute neighbourhood in Hanoi and so much more.
Issue 63 of get lost is on sale from this week at newsagents and online from Apple Newsstand and Amazon.
