Stone Mountain Carving 24 Oct 2009
Georgias Rock Solid Attraction

Explore Georgia

Stone Mountain is Georgias unique natural wonder, complete with the faces of Confederate forefathers emblazoned on its side to provide a destination of history and adventure which attracts up to 4million visitors a year.

Located in the metro Atlanta area, it is easily recognised with an exposed mass of granite, featuring the Confederate carving on its Face which measures 3 acres in size, making it the worlds largest relief sculpture.

The carving was sculptured by a number of artists to include the renowned sculptor Gutzon Borglum who created the carving of Robert E Lee in 1916. However this was not completed until around 50 years later when the Confederate icons Thomas Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis were added. The carving of the three men, which towers 400 feet above the ground measures 90 feet by 190 feet and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain.

Stone Mountain Park has recently received $10 million in improvements. It offers a Sky Hike, a quarter-mile hiking, jumping and climbing course through the treetops and a Summit Skyride which takes visitors 825 feet above the ground to the peak of the Stone Mountain. There is also a new, digitally, re-mastered LaserShow Spectacular, the latest upgrade to the worlds longest-running laser show.
