Wednesday, May 19, 7 pm Willa Cather's Gender and the American Southwest In this lecture, Greg Forter traces the social and psychological influences on Cather's gender development. He suggests that her teenage cross-dressing experiments reflected a conflicted identification with men that affected her aesthetic choices. Cather tried to claim authority for her writing by developing a "virile" poetics-a style of writing that she herself called "manly." But she also criticized this manly aesthetic and celebrated a more receptive, intuitive, and sensuous way of responding to the world. The American Southwest, and in particular the Pueblo Indians, became for her a way of reconciling these conflicting impulses.
Greg Forter is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. His first book, Murdering Masculinities, about American crime fiction, was published in 2000 by New York University Press.
