Last year, concurrent with the celebration of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museums fifth anniversary, The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation made a gift to the collection of 24 photographs by Alfred Stieglitz (1864 1946). Beginning May 2, 2003, an exhibition of these extraordinary photographs will open at the OKeeffe Museum and will be on view through January 25, 2004. The works in this gift capture a broad spectrum of Stieglitzs achievement and include 12 photographs of OKeeffe that range in date from 1917 to 1935; several of which depict the artist with examples of paintings in the Museums collection.
Ray Krueger, Chair, The Georgia OKeeffe Foundation, commented on the gift: The Georgia OKeeffe Foundation is making gifts of Stieglitzs photographs to institutions around the world that understand the importance of Stieglitz to photography and modern art. We are pleased to include the Georgia OKeeffe Museum among them, as it presents the art of Georgia OKeeffe and explores the influence of American Modernism.
Moreover, the gift includes photographs of New York buildings, and a number of works that Stieglitz made at Lake George, where he usually spent the summer and fall at his familys residence. These include six prints from his "Equivalents" series, and several of trees and architecture. Having these photographs in our collection is a great asset to it, and we are delighted to have them, stated Barbara Buhler Lynes, curator of the Museum.
Stieglitz's career started in the 1880s when he began taking pictures in Berlin, and he soon began experimenting with new techniques and concepts in photography because he believed that photographs could convey emotional and psychological meaning beyond the specific subject matter. That is, he believed that images of objective reality could reflect subjective feelings. He won numerous awards for his work and edited and founded journals dedicated to photography and modern art, such as the celebrated Camera Work. He was one of Americas first advocates of modern art, and over the years, waged a long and successful campaign to have photography valued as art.
His photographs capture the imagination, especially his portraits of OKeeffe, who was one of the handful of American artists he promoted, as well as one of his favorite subjects. In addition to the gift from the Foundation, the exhibit will include several Stieglitz photographs that have been graciously loaned by Joy Weber, a Georgia OKeeffe Museum docent, patron and friend.
