Georgia O

The Georgia OKeeffe Museum and Western Interiors and Design magazine have joined in an exciting partnership to bring innovative and inspiring speakers to Santa Fe for a stimulating educational lecture series exploring different aspects of what is meant by a sense of place. Learn about OKeeffes iconographic paintings and her unique sensibility for the dramatic landscape that inspired her; explore how one of Americas leading designers employs an inventive and sensitive approach to natural materials; and find out what todays architects are creating to reconcile the rich architectural heritage of the Southwest with modern perspectives.

MONDAY, JUNE 28, 7:00 PM: Georgia OKeeffe in a Modern Light Barbara Buhler Lynes, Curator and Research Center Director, Georgia OKeeffe Museum, will discuss how OKeeffe sought to define herself in terms of the relative isolation of the Northern New Mexico high desert and the ways in which OKeeffe established an identity, defining herself in her own way and on her own terms.

Hunter Drohojowska-Philp, author of the definitive biography Full Bloom: The Art and Life of Georgia OKeeffe, will discuss OKeeffes ability to combine the aesthetics of Santa Fe style and the principles of modernism. OKeeffes sensibility was honed from an early age and was most completely realized at her 19th-century hacienda in Abiquiu, where she integrated the indigenous use of adobe and vigas with modern art, modern furniture, and a distinctly modern sense of light and space.

MONDAY, JULY 5, 7:00 PM: Total Design Award-winning international architectural, interior, and product designer Clodagh, founder of Clodagh Design and author of Total Design, will speak on her design philosophy, which includes feng shui and BioGeometry as integral to imparting a sense of well-being. Clodoaghs unique style has been described as Zen Luxury.

MONDAY, JULY 12, 7:00 PM Architecture: The Modern Impulse Ted Flato, principal of Lake/Flato Architects and winner of the American Institute of Architects 2004 Firm of the Year, will examine the development of southwest architecture that incorporates indigenous materials to create innovative methods of building which are aligned with local climate and landscape, yet are modern in design.

Rick Joy, AIA, principal of Rick Joy Architects will discuss how sensory experience and the desert landscape influence his thinking and making of space, resulting in architecture that is both visually stunning and environmentally sensitive. Joy is acclaimed for his contemporary buildings located in the Southwest.
