The new Great Gatsby movie is finally hitting our screens on 16th May. Visitors can step back in time and visit The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art and Ringling's stunning five storey Ca'd'Zan Mansion to experience first-hand the glamour and glitz of 1920s America when The Great Gatsby was set.
The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art is the jewel of Sarasota's cultural heritage, created by John Ringling in the mid 1920s and set in a stunning 66 acre estate, reminiscent of Gatsby's decadent residence. Ringling was a collector of fine art and the gallery boasts an eclectic collection of masterpieces by Rubens, Titian, Van Dyck and El Greco as well as modern exhibitions.
In 1924 Ringling created his very own Venetian Gothic inspired Ca' d'Zan Mansion in the grounds described as 'the last of the Gilded Age Mansions' to be built in America. After a $1.5 million restoration, its doors are now open to the public who can explore 56 incredible rooms filled with art and original furnishings. Like Gatsby, the Ringling family were known for hosting a party to remember and their Ca' d'Zan Mansion was definitely the place 'to be seen'.
Ringling was not only a collector of fine arts, but a circus aficionado and founder (with his brothers) of the famous Ringling Circus in 1884. His circus legacy is honoured and remembered at The Ringling Museum of the American Circus. Established in 1948, The Circus Museum celebrates the extravagance of 'The American Dream', the history of the American Circus, and its unique relationship with Sarasota. Guests can peruse rare handbills, posters and art prints, elaborate costumes, performing props, as well as a selection of the original circus equipment.
