G Hotel's Pastry Chef bagged Gold Medal Award

They say good things come in small packages. It was no awe how G Hotel’s petite Pastry Chef, Tan Kwee Lian could whip up a culinary storm with her talent and charm the panel judges at Fonterra’s Pastry and Pizza Challenge 2013. Often misled for her petiteness and bubbly personality, Chef Tan took the Pastry Challenge with her amazing and decadent creation Chocolate Entrapment and won the Gold Medal Award of RM 3,000.

Organized for the third time by Fonterra Foodservices, Fonterra Pastry and Pizza Challenge returned with much panache this year with 19 finalists serving up outstanding pizzas and decadent cakes. Themed as “French Reminiscent” this year, the two-day challenge provides the platform for Malaysian chefs to unleash their inner creativity and the opportunity to show off their culinary talent. The 19 finalist was whittled down from close to 60 entries during the first round. Applicants from this competition were chefs from renowned hotels, restaurants and cafes.

During the challenge, Chef Tan created a multi-layered cake with beautiful textures taste and combination of silky smooth chocolate mousse, crumble, and delicious ganache. On top of the medal award and cash prize, Chef Tan walked away with an exclusive three-day culinary training under Jean Francois Arnaud, sponsored by HTC Asia.

The pastry challenge panels of judges were led by Chef Jochen Kern, Head of School of Culinary Arts, Chef Arthur Heng, the Executive Chef of Concorde Hotel, and Chef Chan Eng Hua, Executive Pastry Chef at Sheraton Kuala Lumpur.

The competition was tough but that did not stop Chef Tan from beating down the rest of the 8 finalists in the pastry competition. “I was super excited to receive the Gold Medal Award, and this is my first, so it was a little unexpected. It was really an experience and I felt really honoured to be exposed to techniques and skills of some of the best in the industry. I’ve learned some essential tricks of the trade that will help me to the next level in culinary arts”, quipped Chef Tan.

Chef Tan had previously bagged several medal awards over the years in the Battle of the Chefs 2007 & 2011, MIBC Challenge 2008, 4th Penang Chef’s Challenge 2010, and Pattaya City Culinary Cup 2010.
